Programable Options

What are the programmable options that are available to owner.
I'm talking about the kind you have to go to the dealer for unless you have a code reader/programer.
An example for one is daytime running lights on or off.
What are the others and where can I find a list of them?

There are numbe rod options your dealer can code & further options that can be coded with non-Dealer software (BMW factory software called NCS Expert.

Dealer coding options:
- Selective locking (remote only unlocks driver's door on initial unlock click)
- Memory Key function (where you use different key fobs the car will adjust to each key)
- Miles to kms
- degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius
- One touch window enable/disable

NCS Coding options:
- BFD (brake force display), this is where the 3rd brake light flashes under heavy braking
- Change speed that the central locking "auto locks" at
- Enable acoustic acknowledge for lock/unlock (you can also add additional options in iDrive for this with NCS)
- Enable Homelight function control via remote key fob (uses the trunk lid button on key)
- Enable a digital speedometer in the centre of instrument cluster (where you see range, mpg & average speed currently)
- US spec corner light enable/disable (your front amber side lights)
- Change window behaviour when doors are opened
- Enable MP3 playback
- Retrofit iPod interface or Dension Gateway interface
- Set entertainment source default & default iDrive screen on start up
- Remove legal disclaimer on iDrive
- Add indicator display function in HUD
- Set Rainclose function for sunroof

There's probably more that can be done but I can't remember just now.

Here's a list that I had bookmark on my iPhone for coding options. I think I got it from the M6 forum.

They can also do lots more things that aren't on that list like turn off the anti-trap error for your windows and sunroof. (The error that prevents your windows from closing because something is in the way). I kept getting some sort of anti trap error when closing my sunroof every once in a while and they turned it off for me and said to make sure no one's fingers are ever in the way of the sunroof because their fingers may get chopped off... They could have done my windows too, but I didn't have an issue with them and its a lot easier to get things "caught" in those.

If you cannot get it turned on there is an alternative, you can hardwire and add some relays. There is a real nice guide put together by 30yrveteran, it all depends on how handy you are. The relays are standard 5 post variety, you can even buy them on amazon.com.

All you need is:
1) a cable ($30 - $100)
2) a copy of the OEM software BMW uses (free) - do a search for DIS
3) many hours of reading on how to install and use the OEM software

You need NCS Expert for more complicated programming like enabling MP3 playback. This is also OEM dealer software but I would work on getting DIS going first before playing with NCS. Like Herb mentioned above, start by reading the guides at bmwcoding.com.

There is no easy way to get this software going. It took me about 2 weeks to get everything setup and I work in IT. So it's not like someone can just give you a 5 minute lesson and you are set, it's a multi step process to get VMWARE installed then get the cable working etc...

I've been too busy at work these days to make it out to the Woodbridge La Poloma meets.

In the thread below is everything you need to know, the m6 is pretty mich identical, difference is they have folding mirror code options and some other small differences. Once you master this turn on mp3 is simple. The dealer usually does it for 100 or 150, much simpler thay route.

I did a post on this in the 7 series forum around 6 months ago. It showed all available options. http://www.bmwcoding.com/ will tell you everything. Be careful when doing coding, you can brick a lot of modules. The dealer can only undo your mistakes by replacing the screwed up modules! This can be very costly mistakes.

Installing DIS from scratch is a big challenge, that can taking many weeks sometimes. It can make a IT guy look dumb! If you buy a copied file from some sites, you do not have to beat your head against the wall so hard! However you might have trouble correcting Linux settings that cause functionality problems!

Please spend some time reading before attempting this!

Good Luck!

There are a few BMW coding sites out there now, I find this one to be the most active:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...play.php?f=233

There's a guy on there that has set up pre-packaged VMWare machines for download. It takes all the hassle & mystery out of the installs. I have also set up my own pre-packaged machines but don't have them shared online, I have used them to set up a coupe of other kits for guys over on BMW-driver.net. It certainly makes it a lot easier than the first time I did the full install for DIS v44!

Another site for this kind of stuff is http://www.bmwcoders.com & the original site (now private access only), http://www.bmwecu.org

You get guys selling the pre-packaged machines on Fleabay too.

Here's a little guide I wrote about the various cables, CAS with build dates pre March 2007 have far more (& cheaper) options, the newer cars require a D CAN capable cable, go to post #8 for the details:

Well got my cable and software today (BMW INPA / Ediabas K+DCAN USB Interface D-CAN CAN OBD OBD2 New) . About 35 bucks on eBay
Im going to buy a cheap used notebook off of eBay for stand alone use just for my 6er. I only have apple products and don't want to use bootcamp or the like.
Ill be glad to just be able to read out codes and do resets until I get a mastering of everything else. My first thing I want to do after that is the auto window roll up on lock. Saw that some place...
Wish me luck

I don't think you can do that with coding, well you have to "press & hold" the lock button on the key to close windows on locking (& "press & hold" the unlock button to open all the windows on opening).
For some reason comfort closing is enabled on euro cars but not US cars.

Best of luck with the coding, take your time to understand it & you'll find it quite easy. DIS is brilliant for trouble shooting, even if you don't do your own work. At least you'll have a good idea what's up before you take it to the shop.
