Comfort Access keys and persoanlized settings?
For cars equipped with Comfort Access, are user preferrences (such as memory positions) stored and triggered with the use of personalized keys?
If so, what happens when both keys are in proximity. Which user profile will the car assume? the key use to open the first door or the driver's door? Thanks. |

User preferences are specific to the key. When both keys are in proxity there can be confusion since the door locks are controlled by comfort access also. It is a good question. It might be the key with the stronger battery or the last once used to operate the car. The last time I had both keys in the car, the vehicle started up in User 2 although User 1 is my primary. I will pose it tomorrow when I take the car in for key recognition issues!

I can just see it happening soon...
Owner: Open the driver's door, BMW. Car: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

On my Lexus it retains the last users position and information if the door is opened by touching the door handle. However if the key fob is used to unlock the car by pressing the unlock button, the car recognizes which key fob was used and pulls up the profile of the driver. I have had both me and my wife in the car with our keys on us at the same time and the settings were retained from the last active profile. Profiles are only pulled up if a button is pressed on the corresponding key fob. When opening the door using the smart access sensor on the door handle (similar to the comfort access), all it does is unlock the door. Once in the driver seat the proximity of the key fob to a sensor in the steering column and the sensor in the armrest determines if its driver1 or driver2 in the driver seat. I'm sure BMW would use similar or better logic to do the same. I haven't had both keys in my pocket at the same time though. Ill try and let you know.

When my wife and I both have our fobs, the seat position will apparently adjust to whichever fob it senses, regardless of who is opening the driver door. So if she is near the car and has her fob in her purse, the seat will sometimes adjust to her position, even though I am opening the driver's door and have my fob in my pocket. A bit frustrating but I simple push my memory seat button and the seat goes back to my position.
