2002 x5 ac only work on max

I have a 2002 x5 4.4

Recently the air starts blowing as it if it was on the highest setting even though it is set on the lowest. This happens whether I put it on auto or manually adjust the intensity. Does anyone know why this is happening> and also how to fix it?

This is a common problem with the fans in BMW's... It is called an FSU (Final Stage Unit)... I replaced this in my 98 E39 and my friend has one failed in his E36... It is number 3 in the picture at the site below... I haven't changed one in the X5 yet... Not sure how hard they are to get to...
