2002 M Roadster Shifting Problem
I have a 2002 M Roadster, manual transmission that has about 110k miles on it. Its been maintained pretty well but over the last year, when the weather gets warm, it gets very difficult and sometimes impossible to shift the car into 1st gear while it is stationary. If I turn the car off, it will go into gear.
Because the car became undriveable due to this problem when I was far from home, I was stuck taking it to a fairly shady looking shop. They told me that I had to replace my transmission. Although I felt I was getting ripped off, I didnt have any options so I had them put in a rebuilt transmission. Long story short, this didnt fix the problem. So they put in another rebuilt transmission and then also told me that the clutch could be damaging the transmission, despite the fact that it had 40% left, but just because I didnt want to deal with going back and forth I had them put a new clutch in as well. So after changing the transmission and clutch, the problem is still here.
Some have suggested that it could be the master/slave cylinders but my understanding is that if that were the case, the clutch would be very loose at the top and also if I pumped the clutch the problem should at least temporarily go away. Neither of these things are present in my situation.
I feel like I definitely got ripped off already and really cant afford to lose more money on this car. Does anyone have any suggestions? I dont know much about cars so please keep that in mind in how you respond. Thanks much. -J
