I looking at a 98 BMW 528i with 180k I was thinking about purchasing I was wandering if 4200 is a good price? Is 180k to much miles? He has a stack of service papers for the car?

That's a fair price for a bimmer w/ 180k mileage.
But I will have to warn you, be ready to put another $2k into the car as soon as you buy it. They all need something repaired at this point....suspension, brakes, cooling system, a/c, aux fan, 2ndary air pump, oil filter gasket, steering rack leak, etc....

Be sure to have it inspected by a BMW indie before making an offer.

Price sounds right. Based on my experience I would check the control arms, trust arms, rear ball joints. Check if there is any vibration at any speed up to 80mph. Take a look at the belts. That could tell you how well they cared about the cooling system. Check the date stamp on the expansion tank. A/C and aux fan is easy to check. Roll down all the windows. Check if sunroof can tilt/slide.
As many others stated expect to spend 1-2k/year on maintenance/repair. Service records are nice to have but I was shown fake records before the purchase. After I payed for the car I was told they will send me the service records without the PO's data on it. They have never sent it even after I went back to them many times for this. Some parts which was indicated replaced on the fake service records failed in less than 10k after the purchase. |
