I forget exactly but i think I was around $9000 off, possibly more with incentives, on a new 2012 that was in dealer inventory. I changed my mind at the end, but they were definitely working with me.

Why did you back out? Were they pissy with you when you left?

Well - technically they backed out - which is probably how I should've framed it. Basically, after an hour at the dealer hammering the deal out, them coming back 3 times to get the best numbers, we agreed on something and I left the dealership.

[BACKGROUND] Their goal was to steal me away from an Audi S5 I was eyeing (and she was a beauty) - which they did. And let me tell you that was an awkward conversation to have with the Audi guys. They knew at the outset I was going over to BMW to see about a deal on the 6, but I was pretty confident the S5 was mine - I even left my car parked in the Audi lot! They took it amicably, and Audi will forever be on the prospect list for me.

But when I got home BMW promptly called my house and said they overstated an incentive available to me and cut the attractiveness of the deal down a bit (a thousand or 2). Nothing major, but I thought it a bit fishy and told them I expected them to keep the deal as-is, otherwise no deal. They finally came back to a very similar, but still worse, number. But at that point I was a bit soured on things and wanted to go the BTO route. In the end it worked out much better for me, so I can't really complain. Much happier with the custom build versus the inventory I would've taken.

PS - I received just over $3300 in incentives for my BTO 2012 - if you exclude the additional economics associated with the 2012 to 2013 trade in that I expect to receive.

What is the point of a dealer calling you to state than their offer was too high??

Sorry! BTO = Build to order. Versus making a better deal for a car on the lot they want to sell ASAP. The S5 is out of the running for now, the BMW 650 is just too darn nice. I will be trading my 2012 650 coupe for a 2013 650 when it comes in in a few months (order placed) - this is another longish-story - with another happy ending it appears. So over the course of 6 months I will technically be on my 3rd Bimmer!

I may not have explained what happened very well. But the dealer basically reneged on our handshake deal. Instead of giving me $9000 off MSRP, they changed it to "only" $8000 off - apparently due to some misinformation they had during our discussions at the dealer. They eventually went back to offering me $9000 off (almost) - but by that time I was already on Plan B (a brand new custom build).
