Continental ExtremeContact DWS mileage check in

I know several members are running Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires on their X3. How are they holding up mileage wise? How many miles do you think you will get out of them? What about ride quality and noise? If I can't get at least 30K out of them with proper care, then I'll buy a set of Scorpion STR's.

I'm due for a new set of 18's and will NOT be buying another set of all season Goodyear Eagle GT's. Even with proper alignment and rotation, the Eagle's are down to the tread wear indicator in less than 20K miles! Do not waste your time & money on these tires!

I have ExtremeContact DWS on my G35x. I know, the X3 might have different wear characteristics with this tire but...

I have about 48,000 miles on my DWSs and they are holding up well. The S for snow is just about worn away. I estimate by the time I have 53,000 miles on them, they will just have the DW(no S) showing in the tread. I drive 75% highway and 25% city.

I rotate my tires every 7,500 miles. The tires are wearing evenly and I'm on track to get over 70,000 miles out of these tires.

There is a slight increase in tire noise as they have worn, but not much. (In the G35, I cannot hear the tires over the engine and wind noise.) I have 50,000 miles on the Scorpions on the X3. The Scorpions on the X3 are louder than the Continentals with similar mileage on the G35.

I did notice that it seemed to take several hundred miles to break in the ExtremeContact DWSs. When the tires were new and I would make low speed lane changes (under 10 mph) in the city, the front tires would squeal. I have not experienced this with any other tires.

Overall, I have been very happy with their performance and will probably be putting a set on the X3 in the fall.

I think that is just a result of the release compound/fluid that is used when the tire is separated from its mould at the factory.

The effect does seem to vary between tire brands and models.

I have noticed it on Nokian WR's so maybe tires with a softer winter compound, and/or more sipes, are more susceptible to being delivered with a slippery tread.
But that should wear off in less than 100 miles I would think.

I don't have Conti's but did replace my OEM 18" Scorpions with Michelin Pilot Sport Plus tires about 40K miles ago. The PSP's still have lots of tread and perform as well or better than the OEM Scorpions while giving a much softer ride -- which was why I bought them in the first place. I mention this tire because it appeared that a long tire life was important to the OP, and these have certainly provided that for me.

Like UncleJ, I also replaced my OEM 18" Scorpions with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires, now with about 23k miles on them. They seem to be wearing about as well as the Scorpions -- I should easily get 50-60k out of them. I agree also that they perform about as well as the OEMs, but have a MUCH better ride. I am curious to see folks' responses on the Conti's because that was the tire I wanted, but could not find anywhere in Feb 2011. I did get a set of the Conti's on my step-daughter's 08 Elantra SE (recently traded in), and they wore very well -- looked almost new after about 20k miles.

I have the DWS but they're barely broken in. So far, nothing about them calls much attention to themselves, or seems that different from the Scorpions.

The Pirelli's and Continental's are both priced better than the Michelin's, so I think I'll stick to my first two choices. I'm leaning towards the Conti's right now and hoping a few more chime in on their experience with them.

I have Continental DWS's on my wifes 2008 X3 with 18" tires. I put them on at 19.5 k miles.
The car currently has 43.5k miles and I can still easily see the S on them. I have rotated them once maybe twice in the 24k(cant remember) miles we have had them on the car. I bought the car from an auction so I dont have experience with the original tires although the guy who I had pick the car up at the auction said it rode like garbage with the original tires. Based on what I see 60+k miles should be no problem. My originals were almost shot at 19.5K BTW, maybe they were run underinflated. Car rides and noise levels are fine, I wish my A6 on 18's would ride as nice as the BMW. I highly recommend them. They are a hard tire to get, seem to be in high demand, at least when I got them in March 2010.

I also have them on a 2002 Maxima. Those tires have 40k miles on them and the S still shows. I should get at least 60 k on them, maybe as much as 80k. They are MUCH quieter than the Kuhmo's that were on it or the OEM bridgestones as well. The only issue on the maxima is 3 sidewall bubbles from hitting potholes. They were replaced free under warranty. It was a very bad winter for potholes the year I put them on the Maxima. This issue never happened on the X3 although both cars used on the same roads. The tire dealer it had to do with the design of the Nissan wheel, it was more susceptible to pinching the tire.

PM me if you need further details

Good luck with the purchase. For the price they are a great tire. Let us know what you think of them.

Continental's are on and WOW, big difference from the Badyears! Before I had them mounted, I flexed the sidewall by grabbing it and they are nowhere near the stiffness of the Eagle GT's sidewall. The installer even commented how easy they were to mount. This does concern me a bit as far as durability for say potholes, ect., but until they prove me wrong, I'll cross my fingers that this isn't a weakness. Handling is predictably a bit spongy now but I expected that will full tread depth compared to a worn out tire. I'll sure the feel will improve once the tires break in and scrub a little tread off. They are for sure all of the following: VERY quiet, VERY smooth, and much more compliant than the Goodyears. The Eagle GTs were always smooth, just never this quiet or nice of a ride. I'm sure I'll miss some of the Goodyears stiffness but sub 20k tread life just isn't going to cut it for me.

Glad you like them, they seem to be a good fit for the X3. I think your roads arent as bad as in NJ so I thinl you'll be ok with potholes. Just try to avoid the really big ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!
