Retrofit Auto-Trunk Open with "Kick"
Hey guys,
has anyone tried to retrofit MY'11 F10s with the auto-open trunk kit that allows the driver to "kick" underneath the bumper (like MY'12 F10s and F30s)? Thanks!

Does anyone have a parts diagram that shows the sensor and loom that registers the "kick.". I've looked on realoem and getbmwparts but can't locate the part numbers etc. I'm seriously considering this. I already have the powered trunk, so hopefully it's just a sensor and coding.

What is crazy is you don't even have to do a set motion. I was vacuuming my ride yesterday and the cord of the vacuum slid under the trunk. The car then opened it automatically..lol.

My friend had it on his 2012 and so I assumed it was on the 2011 as well and when I went to purchase my 2011 CPO I stood there kicking like an idiot 5 or 6 times before the salesman told me that it wasn't available on the 2011.
![]() Let me know if anyone finds a retrofit. |

Surely there has to be a way to do this on a 2011 F10 with an already powered trunk? Its definitely not rocket science, but I'm pretty surprised with the collected technical savvy of my fellow forum members that SOMEBODY can't come up with a reasonable way to do this (without buying a 2012). C'mon guys (and gals) - lets get a "fix"!!
Maybe 1 of the BMW dealers/tech advisors on the forum has a workaround? There has got to be a pretty big demand, judging by the number of 2011 F10 owners, including me, seen at various parking lots across the world doing a poor impression of some sort of a "chicken dance" to try to get theirs cars' trunks to magically open...

The power tailgate is not needed and has nothing to do with the happy feet opening...

Even if you somewhow retrofit all the hardware required for this trunk opening it does not mean that your car will have the correct software version to support it even after coding.

Exactly. I would love to have it even without the power trunk. All I need is the release so the trunk pops...when arriving to the car with shopping bags...

Thinking out loud....meant to give others ideas rather than a single message.
I am sure there are ways to do it, the problem is, is that if you design a jury rig solution, you need to be very careful that there are software/hardware interlocks in place so that you don't open your truck when your are driving and the downward sensor detects a change. I am sure with an RFID reader, an RFID chip or two, a tiny computer, some programming, a few relays, and a motion sensor or two, you could rig something up. The chance you could get it to work with the BMW key fob is slight though. The amount of work you would need to do to ensure the interlocks are done properly would also be time consuming. Since the software probably was not included with non auto open cars, I doubt you could plug into the BMW computer for most of it. All in all, those without a system will probably find it cost prohibitive to install something like this just to avoid setting down a package.... That said...those with comfort access already have the RFID issue solved because they can open the truck via the button...I suppose you might be able to rig a motion sensor to act as a switch and run a circuit in parallel to the button on the trunk so that either one would open the trunk. Again, you won't have an interlock to prevent unintended openings, but it might work.
