Cool New and just bought an 89 535i

Hey all.
Just picked it up for $1750. 160000 miles.

The bad... (I know I should have had it checked out first)
Some rust (not much)
Primer black. Will eventually need paint.
Here's the big one...
Bad valve. I'm going to know more tonight after my buddy looks at it but this is bad news and I can't spend much more than like $500 to have it in good running condition.

I'm thinking get am engine on cl and have my buddy put it in for like $100.

It didn't pop an engine check light til after I bought it and I didn't notice the valve knocking before purchasing. Now time to make the best of it.

What are your opinions?

Bad valves do not "knock". When you burn a valve you lose compression. The M30 engine in your 535 needs periodic valve adjustments. If someone let it go they could rattle pretty good. This does not mean you need a new engine. Start by doing a valve adjustment. Do some searches on the BMW forums for advice on how to procede. I set my valve clearances between the cam and rocker. My engine is now almost silent, just a light tick from valves and injectors, as it should be.

Sled,

Will you do mine?
They sound like a broken chainsaw!
It's that time.
I have put 20k on the car this year!

Weezymagic, welcome!

Love the '35's!

Tom

Thanks Sled!

Concur...
San Diego sucks in the summer.
Not worth the drive.

But, if you feel the need to come west, there'll be additional purpose in your travels!

Besides, my dad was a TV repairman, and we have the ULTIMATE set of tools!

Aloha!
