trade in value, guy offered....

so am at war with my self in my head on getting rid of the 745... its at 120k miles, looking to trade for a 2007 wrangler unlimited that has the slanted roof which i really liked the jeep is 74k miles, asking price 19.5k. which is 1k under book value. its in awesome shape but the thing im questioning is the trade in value.... hes giving me $6500 for my car. kbb says my car is worth $8k in fair condition and 9k in good... id say its in good condition but ill say fair because stupid airbag light is on and amp blew but still sounds like a 745 just without the premium sound. he says because the car is lowered and the aftermarket wheels take away from the value of the car. ect. just woundering what your .2 cents is on here? would u let your 7 go for $6500? its never had an engine problem ever. mtec angel eyes, magnaflow exhaust, lowered, aftermarket wheels, tint. ect. heres a pic of the jeep.

Try a sell- by- owner if you'd like to get an extra grand. Dealers have overhead so they need to make money when they sell your car.

They will sell it around kbb or less so they have to low ball you on the trade.

Also, a private buyer won't contact you unless they like the upgrades. Hence a call would mean they see value in your upgrades.

My personal pref is stock. As a rule of thumb, stock equates to a conservative owner. Conservative owners are more likely to follow maintenance schedules and not use Jiffy Lube and alley mechanics. They also are more likely to only have used premium gasoline. There are always exceptions to the rule.

More often than not, people who dump money into pimping their ride look for ways to cut corners on other things. Their priority is to receive praise from hood rats vs properly maintaining the vehicle. They are more likely to use Seafoam, 87 octane gasoline, and Jiffy Lube. Again, there are always exceptions to the rule.

The trade in game is a zero sum loss. If they offer more for the trade in, they charge more for the vehicle you are there to buy. If they offer $1500 more for your vehicle, they will charge $1500 more for the vehicle you buy from them. You still pay the same amount. The only exception is if they need to move more volume for that month vs make more cash. Volume matters too. Then they may take a $1000 hit just to make the sell.

$1300 under fair trade in? trade in the rule of thumb and then the customer then looks at fair condition retail which is like $11,000. im debating just shopping around. i had no problem last year a dealer said we will give u fair trade in right now which then was 9500. but also wasnt fair because i didnt have a airbag sensor fault or something and a blown l7 so i decided not to do it.

Take it to Carmax and see what they give you, they'll buy your car without a trade-my buddy did very well whith his 330Ci and E350 and I did $1500 above what I was asking in the paper on an '06 Saab 9-3.- in PA there is a similar company called Carsense.

Given the wheels and lowered suspension I agree that it severely hurts resale and the lowball is related to that. The miles are ugly but that is already reflected in the trade in price.

KBB way over estimates values and is pretty worthless.

Dealers use the Black Book auction values.

Edmunds TMV is a more realistic guide for car values.

How much they deduct for the aftermarket alterations is up to them.

On a separate note: $19.5 is ridiculous for that Jeep- let me guess: 0 service records. A quick look at Edmunds a guessing on some options puts the jeep at $16.5. Here, you can put in the correct options.

Since it is likely he is too high on the Jeep, he either needs to move the jeep price down or your trade up. That is the beauty of selling to Carsense or a private party. This will be a VERY DIFFICULT car to sell to a PP and you should work a deal based on net out of pocket once you see the TMV with options on the Jeep. Remember, many dealers sell below retail. Northcoast Auto in Bedford OH sells great cars mostly lease returns at well below retail. In this economy, retail is a starting point, not an end point.

What are you trying to say.... Guys that have modded there cars are less likely to get repair's done correctly? There are lot's of guys on the forums who have modded there cars I hope that wasn't a insult to them.

There are always exceptions such hobbies and people with so much money they can afford to toss ten grand into something without batting an eye, there is also the general rule.

I play probabilities when making decisions.

Let's sample 200 e39 vehicles (pretend).

100 e39s that are close to stock (CTS) vs 100 that are lowered, riding on 19"rims, blacked out windows and more.

I would wager that between these to sub-sets, the close to stock (CTS) group will have a higher number of dealer service records than the pimp-my-ride (PMP) group. I'd also wager the CTS group will have more scheduled maintenance performed at or before the due dates than the PMR group. More, not all.

Of course the PMR group will have some members that meet or exceed the CTS group's maintenance. However, with the exception of the hobby person or the money is no object person, people who dump thousands of dollars into esthetics vs investments have different priorities than the majority of the CTS persons.

This doesn't make one group better or worse. It simply makes them different. Nothing wrong with that.

Thus, when I purchase used vehicles I know the odds are more in my favor of the vehicle having a better maintenance history when it is closer to stock. Although nothing is 100% I'll go with the 75% likelihood over the 40% likelihood of a well maintained vehicle. All I've done is decrease the possibility of buying a money pit. So far I've picked nothing but winners which is important due to my traveling so much.

I like the fact that people are different. Makes life more interesting. I'm just a biggest bang for the buck kind of guy.

Younger people are also more likely to PMR. That is very normal. I'm just not the guy that's going to buy it when it goes up for sell. However, somebody else will.

+1

I feel exactly the same way. $6500 is close to nothing for what you have. I mean I know that's what it may be worth now, but still - can that small a sum of money please you as much as the 7 does?

Bring it back to stock and fix the airbag light AND replace the amp if you want to get more for it. Otherwise take the loss. The Jeep seems overpriced for that mileage too.

I posted mine on Craigslist for $10k - which I felt was low - in order to sell quickly and go buy the Alpina. Mine was a 2002 745Li with 184k miles, it was sold cash in a day and a half, and I got quite a few other calls about it over the course of one day...don't take $6500. Additionally, bring the suspension back to stock and sell your springs to get a little extra money out of it. Just my experience, and my $0.02.

lowered cars dont sell well. For the most part a lowered car has taken some bruises to the under carriage. there are some exceptions of course.

Good idea. For some reason people don't keep stock parts. I have no idea what they do with them. The OP may have kept his but many don't.

I won't even look at a car that is lowered or has "rims". Put it back to stock and sapsuckes like me will never know. I have modded a few cars and always keep stock parts including exhaust.

I'll say again, the jeep price is ridiculous.

"gang banger rims" I didn't know they made them..... Can you show me what those look like I'm curious to see how they look?

Yeah I thought that might ruffle a few feathers. But since you ask, 20-24" nonstock rims that have the look. You know it when you see it and when you're the buyer you get to decide what is gang banger or not. It's a free world and and people can dress up their cars how they like (as I have done) just be prepared for fewer buyers and more lowball offers.
