Exclamation Newbie Here with small problem with radio reception

Hello fellow X5 owners. Just introducing myself to the fest. Good to be back. Was under a different name when I previously owned a 2003 BMW 540i m-sport package(loved that car). I just got a 2008 Bmw x5 4.8i with every option available except aero package at a great price with 52k miles. Black on Tan, 3rd row, heads up, ventilated seats, sport package, premium package, etc. Love this truck but feels heavy. Don't think is was faster than my '03 540m-package but could be wrong.

Anyhow, I have a small problem with the radio reception. At certain stations (almost all of them) when I am driving under tunnels or over trees etc, the stations tend to fade away and can't even get to enjoy the premium sound system without the fade aways interupting. It kinda goes faint and it's like the volume goes down. Anyone else has had this problem. Any ideas what this could be. Im thinking something with the antenna of the truck but want some other ideas if any before trying to replace this part??

Never had this happen to any of my other cars.

(didn't download spell check yet so don't judge, at work so speed typed)

I haven't. I was hoping someone in the fest might have had this problem and told me what is was about. I rather do it myself if it was a minor issue. I hate it when a dealer holds a car for weeks for something so small.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Have you tried turning off HD Radio? I used to have a similar sounding issue when HD radio would fade in and out on my E83. I haven't observed this on the X5 yet.

I don't know how to even turn it off. Never noticed that option before. How would I go about searching if it is on HD? Thanks.

I'm still an I-drive neophyte, but there is an option to turn it off if you go to the radio menu. I think you have to go to an individual station, select it, and, you'll see a check box for HD. I will take a look tonight.

I also have same issue, FM reception is poor and HD stations are loosing signal.
I asked the dealer to check antenna connection during my last service and they said it's all good.

I rarely use the radio now... just MP3s only.

You would think with a price tag of over 50k, this 20th century invention (or 19th century) called the radio would work perfectly fine for the life of a vehicle. Guess nothing ever works perfect. Then again with the hd technology it made it more complicated. It does get anoying listening to a favorite tune fading in and out. Or bmw figured no one would use the radio.

I though HD was only applicable to the AM band.

No, HD is for both FM and AM. I personally never listen to AM, but I nearly always use HD. I experienced weak signal and some fading on FM today when driving also, and it wasn't HD related. The regular FM signal was just weaker than it should have been. The antennae definitely seems weaker than in my old X3, but I wouldn't call it bad. I do live in the city however, and I imagine it could be worse in more rural settings.

I also live in the city and it's bad for me. The sound really gets low to the point where you cant even enjoy a song. I don't understand why an antenna would be so weak on an expensive vehicle. Should have been a silent recall. I have a 2000 honda accord that I use for work and I never experience this even going under long tunnels. I'm afriad of replacing the antenna because it'll probably continue to happen. You think an antenna from an x3 would fit?

This happens in my vehicle too and I wonder if it is not from the antenna, but from the stations themselves. Sometimes people in the car with me will say, "why did you just turn that down? I was listening to that" when I have not touched the volume control. Maybe satellite related. Who knows?

Something to know, if your sound volume goes lower as you are coming to a stop it is normal and can be adjusted through Idrive, maybe you already know, just checking.

I def know it is not the stations themselves. As I go under tunnels or where there are alot of trees, if fades away. Some stations do get some static affect on them as well.

If this were also true, it would happen on my daily driver as well but it never does. I get perfect reception in the radio. Only on the x5 has this affect!
