E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Question Replacing the bonnet heat sheild

Heyy Everyone,

I have a 1988 320i e30
4 door 6 cylinder

Under the bonnet the heat shielding has turned to a very brittle foam and keeps crumbling and falling into my engine bay and I was just wondering what I could replace it with, I want something that's not to expensive but I don't want it to be cheap and narky, any suggestions

Some guys have fitted the insulation mats from the E36 models.
Makes the engine bay look neat and less engine noise.

Or you can buy sound-deadening pads from a spares shop...these are adhesive cork and bitumen tiles that you cut to shape and stick on....then apply a layer of black "Bakkie" liner or pick-up liner to finish it off.

Where do you get the E36 pads & at what price ?
I have tried using sound dampening material, as I used in my Dyno room http://www.nicksracing.com/Newslette...etter%2057.htm, but that cannot take water & then falls apart

Look in the local junkyards, or breaker yards as our USA friends refer to them for scrapped E36 cars and look for a hood insulation in good condition. It will need to be trimmed down a bit to fit the E30 and you need to glue it into place using contact adhesive.

Any form of insulation including thermal fibre-glass type insulation can be used provided you give it a good coating of Bakkie Liner/Rhino liner to seal it off.

I am busy searching for an E36 mat for my 318i but there are not too many breaker yards in this small town I live in.
