What's Going on Here? - Conclusion
I got my car back yesterday. Per the SA, the codes indicated that the throttle motor which controls the opening and closing of the throttle valve was not working properly;
46301 throttle valve faults in throttle valve diagcode D1160-00000000_10_002 Parts replaced; 1 11-71-7-804-384 Throttle: 116015 1 13-54-7-792-098 O-ring: 138520 Milage in/out 46301/46305 All repairs N/C. Anyone run into this issue with their 335D? As I will be going out of warranty in a month or so, should I have any concerns? Thanks for your comments. |

I am only aware of one other person saying that part went bad on them. They had well over 100k miles. Get an extended warranty of it makes you feel more comfortable but I'd not make that parts failure weigh highly on the decision.
Curious if you asked of the extended warrant would even cover that part or what the cost would be out of warranty for the repair?

I looked it up. The part cost $480 list. It was probably a 1000 dollar repair job at the dealer. maybe 700-800 at my independent shop. Never-the-less, I am not inclined to get an extended warranty. Since I drive over 35k miles per year, the warranty would cost me around $150 per month. I'm relying on the car to be reliable for hopefully the next 125k miles or so. If it's not, I'll get rid of it and get something else.

The 335d apparently has the more robust auto transmission that is also used in the big 7 series, not the one used in the other 3 series cars. My personal experience and preference is to change the transmission fluid earlier, especially if the color is no longer "pink" and use a full synthetic to the manufacturer's specs.

My understanding is the trans in the D is the same one that was used in the X5 4.8. Changing the fluid certainly helps for wear type failures, am planning on doing mine at about 90K while still under extended warranty (just in case).
But there are also metal fatigue failures that can occur. The cracked foward drum in our 540iT (142K miles) just cost me $5K to get fixed. Actually found an small independent shop that has been around 30+ years that rebuilt mine with a 3 year warranty. A chain shop such as Lee Miles or Aamco couldn't touch this. |

I am well aware that the D has the more robust ZF tranny. I changed my fluid at 35k miles.

Unless it goes through a CPO check then it magically becomes good for 100k miles.
