Check engine soon -code p0443

Last couple of days I have been getting the "check engine soon" light.
Pulled the code at autozone and it was p0443.

Kinda suspect the Gas Cap---but not sure.

code says " evaporative emission system purge control valve circuit"

In layman's terms---can anyone offer some ideas before I take it to the INDIE

Friend is interested in buying the car and I want to make sure all is ok.

67k miles on it----fuel level is a bit low and fuel gauge is showing a quarter tank one day and empty the next.I will be filling up tomorrow.

I have " somehow reset the light " previously by using the trip odometer reset function.

I press the trip reset button--turn the key to pos 1---wait 10 plus seconds, a code SIA 2722 1 appears---but the RESET light never comes on as the instructions state it should

oh---2002 540i sport

Thanks Paul

Is there away to check the gas cap without buying a new one for 37 bucks---I don't have access to another BMW.

i had the same intermittent error. from what i have been reading the gas cap is probably not the issue, but the purge valve itself. i just replaced the purge valve a couple of months ago. so far so good. it is right in front on the M62TU.

i had an evap code P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected, ended up being the cap. I re tightened the cap and drove after a couple of miles check engine light went away havent seen it since, that was a year ago. You seem to have another issue rather then the cap.

Bought a new gas cap---didn't do the trick.
Mechanics scanner did mention some valve.

I have a 540i ---2002

here is a picture of where the Fuel Tank Breather Valve is located on the M62TU.

the part number is 13901433603. i am not sure you would find it at any auto parts store, but you should be able to find it at the BMW service center if you need it immediately. the car will run fine even with the SES light on, so you do not have to get it replaced immediately. you have time to shop around if you would like.

Bimmerfest admins- why does Bimmerfest not supply an image hosting area here? relying on people using other image hosting sites leads to the dreaded red X when the pictures are moved or the image hosting site changes their structure. which in turn makes any threads with those linked pictures about worthless. leading to more people asking the same questions because even if the search function did work, the lack of the pictures in the results would make the results useless. leading to people searching less and asking more of the same questions. just a thought, and a solution on one of the other boards i am on.

REEFIN

Just went and looked at the valve---should be a 10 minute job , once I have the valve.

Other post must have been alluding to a six cylinder or something--unless I am missing something

As the parts places are closed I decided to spray the contacts with some cleaner. I know I am not lucky enough for this to work but the try is FREE and the new part is 80-90 dollars.

Anyone recommend a SITE SPONSOR for the purchase of the valve ?

It would be nice to have a similar picture for the M54 thread:

PAULIN540I- the install should be a super quick job. i had problems getting off one of the vacuum hose connectors. i had to get around it. i am not sure i was just not figuring it out or the connector was suppose to be a one time connector. if that was the case then i should have ordered the connector.

bluebee- thank you for the link. post #8 (for those playing the home game) was the step i was looking for. some sites do not let you link that way to attachments, so i had not tried it here. good to know. that is a great work around for me!

I actually replace the Purge Valve taken from a friends junker----light came back on, so I decide to replace the 2 hose in the engine compartment to and from the Purge Valve.

Just drove 25 miles --light did not come on

I have to put the car on a lift to replace the hose from the charcoal canister if there is in fact another hose back there. Car was in storage for quite a while and the Indie guy said maybe a mouse got to it. I have not seen any mouse evidence anywhere else in the car so I have my doubts .

Hey, maybe the light won't come back on

Take the valve out and see if you can blow thru it with no power connected to it. It should be closed.
Then apply 12volts to it, you should be able to blow thru it.
