Kudos to Booking.com

We returned recently from a 3 week trip through Germany, Italy and back to Germany. I booked 10 different hotels through Booking.com. Using their reviews and reviews from TripAdvisor I searched for small, family run hotels outside of major cities that offered free parking, free WIFI and included breakfast. We were very satisfied with each of the hotels. About 5 days before we were to check into our hotel in Garmisch, I received an email from Booking.com that the hotel owner was hospitalized in critical condition and the hotel could not honor our reservation but they had booked another hotel at the same price. The new hotel was a larger, 4 star property that normally charge more than 20 euros more than our original hotel and breakfast was an additional 15 euros per person. However, booking.com absorbed the extra cost and the hotel honored the price. We never paid more than 85 euros for a double room in any of the hotels we used during our trip. This included breakfast, parking, WIFI and all taxes. So, if anyone tells you Europe is expensive, don't believe them. We also were able to eat very reasonably. The way to do this is to eat where the locals eat. We avoided eating in big cities and in tourist areas. We tried to eat in smaller towns or in some cases at our hotel. We averaged under 50 euros for a large meal including a couple glasses of wine or beer. This is for 2 people. We also purchased the partner Bavarian Castle Pass for 40 euros and used it for admission to 13 different castles throughout Bavaria including Linderhof, Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee, The Residenz in Munich and Nymphemberg. The pass is good for 2 adults so each castle ended up cosing less than 2 euros per person.

I agree with the original poster. Using Booking.com to book our ED itinerary through Germany, Italy, and France.
