I just use the black Apple bumper. I absolutely hate bulky cases, particularly Otter Boxes, as they make the phone impossible to get in and out of my pocket easily whether I'm in the car or sitting anywhere.

I decided a long time ago that I'd rather break and replace rather than deal with a bulky case on a regular basis. I've only broken one iPhone in the 5 years I've had them - iPhone 3G in my shirt pocket, gracefully tripped on a curb and it went flying, hit the corner on the concrete, and made a really cool shattered pattern. The timing worked out well as the 3GS came out a week later, so I only had to suffer through the glass splinters in my fingers for a short period

Anyway, I'm with you on the minimal protection. I rarely drop my phone, but it has happened a few times. The bumper has a few catches, but it seems to be enough to prevent damage. Anything bigger than a bumper isn't worth dealing with as my phone is attached to my hand 24/7.

No cases, covers, skins, or bumpers work with the cradle to my knowledge. This is one of the reasons I never use the cradle, too. That, and I am sure I would forget to grab my phone back out of the center console half the time.

Let me clarify just to make sure, you aren't using your bumper with the snap in right? Or didn't try it at the dealership? That would be welcome news if it fit!

iPhone 4/S is/was the only mobile device I ever needed a case or bumper for, the form factor is much more slippery than even the 3GS (which was my favorite BTW). I really miss the Nokia brick, which could be used to fend off a mugger if needed. Even my old blackberries could be dropped, disassembled/shattered on impact, then put back together with nary a problem. But my first iPhone 4 didn't last a week before getting a stuck button. Boo. And it's not just the phone. Drop this thing on tile or hardwoods and you can maul 2 things at once!

How about something like this?

http://www.amazon.com/elago-Slim-iPh...hone+slim+case

I had something similar and would consider again if I could use the snap in...

Yeah, I've tried everything. I have an Incipio "Feather" snap-on case that I use a lot. It's one of the thinnest out there, but it's not even close to working. Once, I put one of those skins on the back glass and the phone wouldn't even snap in the cradle with something as thin as that, even though there was nothing around the edges.

Sounds rather lamely designed. Or rather, designed to mandate upgrades - which would be fine assuming BMW is quick to update their hardware.

On the plus side, the case-less phone fits snugly in the cradle. Haha.

I keep a dedicated iPod in the car, so honestly, I'm not sure I'd really use the phone cradle that much anyway.

Quick question on your iPod. Have you checked out the album art? If so, is it low-resolution? That's what mine does (brand new iPod). The iPhone art is decidedly higher-rez - presumably since it expects to display on the much better screen...

The album art on the phone is definitely better than the iDrive, but even the iDrive's display can't compete with the Retina display. The images are still very crisp and by no means blurry. I think it looks very good for what it is.

Hmmm - I am talking about something different. More specifically:
  • Using the iPhone - When I see the album art on the iDrive screen, it looks very good. Not retina display quality (of course) but very good considering its stepped down to the car's native rez.
  • Using new iPod - Album art on the iDrive screen displays much more poorly. The resolution appears to be related to the small iPod screen, not the iDrive screen. Result is crappy image.

You guys don't see this?

iPhone5 is around the corner.

If you own an iPhone 4 you're already programmed to buy the iPhone5.

You'll need a new cradle anyway.
You're programmed to happily buy the new cradle.

The only rub is BMW will lag a bit in offering the new cradle. This will cause you noticeable pain.

You will post about this pain. We will reply in kind.

Ah, okay. I see what you're saying now. And no, I don't see a difference. (Admittedly, I've used my iPhone for music only a few times, though.)

I haven't used an actual iPod, so I haven't experienced this.

I heard there are some pretty significant compatibility issues with older generation iPods, but this shouldn't be an issue if you have the latest...

I keep an iPod Classic in the car. It occasionally reboots itself, which is a pain, but it's a pain I live with in order to have 160 GB of music on hand. The artwork on the iDrive screen, though, looks the same as it does when coming from my iPhone 4S.

I use my 4S to listen to music via standard sync cable and it take a couple minutes for the music to start. I have about 3,200 songs on my phone but I mostly listen to a playlist with about 900 songs. Is this delay normal?

If I manually start a song directly on the phone prior to plugging it in, then it plays instantly.

I only have approx. 1500 songs on the iPhone 4 that stays in the car. Sometimes it takes a couple minutes to turn on/connect to the car, but I can hit the home button to speed up the process if it doesn't start immediately. Pushing that button typically gives me the noise the iPhone typically makes when you plug it in to any power source, and then the music starts playing within 2 seconds of the "plugged-in" tone.

Southern6er22 I still don't get why you just don't upload your music to the car's disk drive? It would seem to provide the same functionality without having to have one additional thing plugged in to your car. In addition assuming your iPhone 4s may collect new music, podcast or books you could still use it plugged in or listen to it with BT. This is not meant as criticism but trying to understand what I'm missing.

I loaded about 900 songs on there a couple weeks ago. I like the fact that it doesn't overheat, but that's really the only advantage over the iPhone. My biggest complaints with the hard drive are (in descending order of importance):

1. Navigating playlists isn't quite as simple. Moving through the folders and shuffling the songs doesn't seem as natural as the iPod controls.
2. It took forever to load the music, and the car has to at least be running off battery while this occurs. It took longer than I ever spend in the car, and I don't have a garage to lock it up while this happens, so I had to babysit it. With the iPhone, I plug it into my computer and all of my new songs/changes to playlists transfer in < 1 minute.
3. The iPhone gives cover art. This is at the bottom of the list, but I gotta put something on that big, beautiful display. The main iDrive menu seems like a bit of a waste, and HUD and black panel show everything I use on a regular basis. I really only go into iDrive (aside from music) is to set the parked car ventilation, look at my trip computer info, check oil level, and very occasionally open messages from Google Maps with nav. info. The hard buttons cover my main phone #, nav. destinations, and shortcut to parked ventilation, so my interaction with the system is minimal (and I mean that as a good thing as it's easy and efficient). About 98% of the time I have the Entertainment Information screen up with the controller set on the "next track" button so I only have to tap the controller to move to the next song (random) or search using the thumb wheel.

The hard drive is nice, but the phone works better for me given the way I listen to music and move through my songs. It's been working out pretty well using the iPhone as my primary source and the hard drive as my backup if the phone overheats while sitting in the parking lot. The parked car ventilation helps some, but I still have some trouble on really hot days.

Same Issue

You guys don't see this?

I have exactly the same issue. I leave an iPOD 160 usb connected and I get low-res artwork. The artwork from my iPhone through the snap-in are nice and sharp. Any idea how to solve this?

Well this notification was a blast from the past! Long story short, but I drive a Bentley now. To answer your question, though, my "solution" was to just use my iPhone. Couldn't get the iPod to work (also a 160 GB, a new one) without showing the low rez image. Finally have up.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

LOL if anyone's interested I could definitely post some pics next week - a bit swamped on the domestic schedule for a few days!
