Check Coolant Light just went off.....2006 330i
So I get up this morning to go to the gym and the check coolant light immediately came on when I started the car up cold.
Can I add some water to the radiator or some more coolant so I can get it to the stealership to have it checked out? I don't want to drive it with this problem because I don't want to damage the engine. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? Water pump? Thermostat? I see no signs of a leak anywhere. |

distilled water would be best.
If the light continues to stay on or there is a lot missing don't drive it
and look for leaks. If you find a lot missing don't drive it. Keep track of what you put in . Then you can add an equal amount of fluid later. Do you ever change or check the fluid when was the last time it was changed? |

I bought the car Jan 1 so I have added nothing. Can I add water and drive it 3 miles to the dealer?

I added one cup up distilled water and the light went off. I will drive to dealer Tuesday for diagnosis.

Probably just a couple of ounces low, relative to the sensor triggering level. I once did a similar thing - could see there was fluid in the reservoir, but it was a tad low. Added about half a glass of water, and later got the dealer to top it up with the real antifreeze mix, which completely settled the problem. |

You should consider the Mike Miller Schedule.
You should consider the Mike Miller Schedule.
It doesn't sound like you have a problem with the fluid just a little low. You need to google Mike Miller BMW and email him to get the maintenance schedule. But the lifetime fluid schedule from BMW means a lifetime of only 100k since they do not support it after that the schedule is only built to get them through the warranty period. I would see if you can dig up the maintenance records if you can't find them change all the major fluids so you know where your are starting from. Also I would find a good independent BMW shop and do as much DIY ing as you can. Last edited by ctuna; 04-01-2012 at 09:20 PM. |

I had this on my 2007 335i. I added just the slightest amount of water (should have used BMW certified stuff ...) but for some reason I think the sensor was just stuck, and when I opened it it freed up the sensor. Anyway just an observation. Thats was 6 months ago and no issues since.

I took it to my Indy Shop today. They did a pressure test. He said something about pumping it up to 16 and it stayed at 16 and didn't budge a bit. Whatever that means. Said if there was a leak it would have slowly decreased. He put 4 ounces of fluid in and told me to have a nice day. |

If you have a manual
Redline D6 will really smooth out the shifter. Like butter no notchiness.

Light just went on again yesterday. Added a cup of distilled water. Took it back to my mechanic again and had him pressure test it again. No leaks.
Odd. I don't think it should be eating a cup or so of fluid every three or four months. |
