transm falsesafe bmw e38 740il 1988

My 740il decided to get sick, I have transmission falsesafe message, will only go on 3rd gear and reverse, none of the shif selected iluminated on dash board. I'm stuck, anyone care to share ideas, just replaced new battery, car was working just fine before this happened. Thanks
