to warrantee or not warrantee, that is the question

I have been reading the extended warranty thread and like many of you my new car warranty is up soon. I have been talking to the dealership and the best deal I can get is 3,500 dollars for a 3yr or 36K with a 100 dollar deductable. I have a 2006 convetable with 24K miles in perfect condition. As you can see I put only about 4K miles a year on the car. I have a good relationship with my service advisor and he told me that he would take the gamble, considering my driving and maintanence record and not get an extended warranty. I have been known to gamble but only if the odds are in my favor or at least even. Living in Florida my major concern is the convertible top. Can you tell me your service experiences with your 6 series under 40k miles. Thanks in advance for your suggestions

$3,500 buys at least one or two repair trips. Given that you will only be driving 12k miles during the time the warranty is in effect, I would take the gamble This is particularly true if it is not a BMW warranty as third party company contracts typically come with a long list of items that are excluded from coverage.

The only other consideration is if you think you will sell the car yourself during that period. It might make the car more attractive and easier to sell and you might get a bit more money for the car than if it did not have a warranty.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will probably keep the car for the next few years because it looks and runs great and you can't get much for a 06 on a trade. I am going to try and add a photo.

I know how you feel, my CPO is up in a couple of months also. The only problem with the convertible top issue is that the Top Unlocked error is one that most extended warranties won't cover. You can get on that will handle the convertible motor, but I have only seen one (maybe two?) failures of that part in the last three years on the board.

Even my CPO only would cover the top unlocked issue if it turned out that the sensors had failed. Just keep the Boesman10 push in your bag of tricks and you should be fine.

It has to do with the dreaded top not lock issue with the convertibles. Check this thread out for a quick fix if it ever happens. Just some sensor issue that the recall should have fixed.

Pablo got you straight with the link...keep in mind that the Top Unlocked error is a "soft" issue, there are many that have had this under warranty (me included) and after multiple trips not had it resolved. This is because it is a poorly executed design.

Good luck with your 6, I am going to go naked and have no warranty soon. If it burns me I will dump the car, until then I am crossing my fingers! Lord knows I have had $5000 in warranty/CPO repairs so far but at least it is most of the common fail items so they are out of the way!

auto-POM/ Mercury Select Warranty

Hello, My name is Lisa, I'm with autoPOM! We represent Mercury Select and we are A+ rated with the BBB and A.M. Best. Mercury is one of the oldest providers of extended coverage in the industry and has been providing peace of mind to BMW owners since the 1970's. If you search 'autopom' in this forum, you will find other satisfied BMW owners that have purchased our coverage.

Based on the criteria you have supplied, it appears that I would be able to offer 48k/4 year for a little less then BMW with No interest, No Fee financing with just 10% down...

If you would like a formal quote, I would be happy to provide!
