97 z3 keyless entry

Hello everyone. I have a question. How can I find out if my Z3 has keyless entry? It only came with one key. Just the valet key I think. I took it to a reputable shop to have a keyless entry alarm system installed. They had it for 2 days, but couldn't figure out how to do it. They could install the alarm, but not the keyless entry. Any ideas? I have researched and can't seem to find anything. Thanks for any help out here.

All z3's had only a dealer installed keyless entry security system which are no longer available. The OEM kit had a two button key fob separate from the key which is kind of a pita. Do a search here on the subject. UAS appears to be the company of choice in the aftermarket. Good luck & enjoy the Roadster.

Question

The shop said there was supposed to be some type of module or hook up behind the glove compartment, but they couldn't find it. After looking in this forum, I found several tags in the trunk. They say pre wired for cell phone, pre wired for BMW alarm system, and pre wired for cd changer. The cd changer is installed in the trunk. Could the module they were talking about be in the trunk. These guys install systems in BMW's quite often, but they couldn't do my 97. I'm very confused.

I had installed an aftermarket alarm/keyless entry in my '97. It does plug in behind the glove box, the plug for the alarm is the same one. I think I had to connect one additional wire. The kit was made by Stellar, don't know if they still exist.

On my '99, I looked for OEM, as the Stellar was slightly less than. Never found OEM at a price I wanted to pay, so now i don't worry about it. Take your valuables with you, don't even worry about locking the cabin, they can just slice the roof open to get in. Had that happen before too.

For a UAS system, go to http://stores.ebay.com/United-Auto-Security

In the "Store Categories" panel on the left, click "Z3 & MZ3 96-02"

I like the UAS system, but if the shop couldn't figure it out, I probably won't be able to do it either. Not sure what to do here. I don't want to spend the money at the dealer. I guess I will try another electronics shop near my home in Northern Va. The one I tried first was in Havelock NC.

Here is a link that shows the install - http://rides.webshots.com/album/549886164vBZTzb

If the installer was unable to find the plug, it is possible that an alarm or keyless entry is already installed.

It is already installed, you can get remote fobs from various sources (I got one off eBay), with directions to program.

It some arcane series of things like turn key, open door, pat stomach, stand on head, push button 5 times, close door, rub head, etc.

I'll try to find one on eBay. Hopefully I won't have to chew gum while I'm programming it.

The plug is taped to a brace in the upper left area, it's hard to see, but once you find it all the wires you need are there. I installed my UAS system in about 2 hours, Thier remote/keys suck! I ended up removing the UAS key from the remote and used the factory key and just used the fob on the key ring.

Ok, I ordered the UAS system from eBay. I will try it myself and see what happens.
I will post my result. Hope it's a success.
I have a question about my sub for this car. Would probably be best to start a new thread. Thanks everyone.

The system arrived today. I had it installed in just over an hour. Not sure what those guys at the shop were looking for, but it was right there under some tape. Question. how can I install a motion detector? :-)

When you say motion...... ultra sonic, infra red, trembler? Why not just hook it to the interior light circuit? In order to steal something.....you're going to have to open the door at some point....... motion detectors have many false alarms........ mechanical (door opening) don't.

Thanks for the location. It was exactly where you said it would be.
I want the motion detector because I frequently leave the top down when I'm out. It's probably not necessary since I never leave anything in there, but some people just can't be trusted.
