Hi all,

This is one awesome post/thread!

Bought my first BMW in late April (a 328i sedan). It's now at port for shipment to the US. It will arrive via the Georgia port. I was told it will probably be another 2 weeks or so.

I googled something like "how long for a BMW 3 series to be delivered" or something like that and this thread came up....

All you gotta do is read any posts that I made and you will be satisfied in life. Ignore DSX, Professor, NK (unless you got a vert), ///M-Rated (he's a lame goat). Enjoy the pictures of Asia and GiaGia. Pay close attention to the life tips that Bolt James gives - it's the most important you will ever get.

Oh and watch out for Angler - he will steal your TastyKakes (if you don't know what these are then ignore this comment).

e92-Submarine - is just trouble. It's a shame they let teenagers into the forums!

Define "different," please? The VIN format has been standardized for decades. For a BMW:

WWW MMMM R C Y PNNNNNN
WWW = World Manufacturer ID (WBA = BMW, WBS = BMW M)
MMMM = Model code. This is different for every series, body style & engine combination. It also changes when a model receives a life-cycle impulse (LCI) or "facelift" design refresh at the midpoint of its production run.
R = Restraint system ID. Increments with significant new safety technology but is generally not noteworthy.
C = Check digit (0-9 or X)
P = Plant code
NNNNNN = Serial number within plant production.

The model code in the original post (MMMM=WC73) is now obsolete because the 3er coupe had its LCI refresh in the past year.

The last seven digits (PNNNNNN) are a shorthand unique identifier for a given vehicle and are usually all you need to provide a dealer, e.g., to ensure they order the correct parts to reflect running production changes.

I have found www.vesseltracker.com very useful in tracking the vessel movement. No photo or video provided. However, with a free account, you can query for port scheduled arrival/departure time accurate down to minute, which will be posted 1 day or 2 in advance. The most valuable info for me is the email alert on vessel movement, such as arrival/moored/departure with actual timestamps.

This is great stuff ... I too am anxiously awaiting my '12 335xi coupe and calling the BMW number everyday. Like dwalshapco, my car has been sitting at the German docks for almost a week. Dwalshapco, i don't know how you made it!! Is this typical?

I'm really not sure how typical the wait time is, although I suspect that it's not unusual. Hang in there. It's worth the wait.

I'm addicted to that 800 number, and I'm not even being built yet. It's like daily entertainment -- the suspense is killing me!

I'm too old and too busy for this! ;-)

How long does it take to start production? I ordered my 2012 convertible February 22. As of yesterday, the vehicle has not been assigned a production date, according to the 800 number. Is this unusual? Is BMW behind due to a higher than usual demand?

i placed an order for a 2012 335i last week, and have gotten a production number. i am trying to do as the ED wiki suggests, check the car configuration on the bmw na website. i have been able to add the car with the production number, but there is no configuration information under 'track my car'. how long does this usually take to show up? or am i looking in the wrong place?

My 528i showed up last year as soon as I had the vin number.

Thanks for such a great how-to. Just ordered a 335i convertible for PCD, and we'll have a lot of fun tracking it over.

When is your PCD? I ordered a 335 vert on May 11 and have a PCD date of 7/19.

Wow great post! How do they load the cars onto & off the ships? Do they drive every car on? I just ordered a 2013 335xi sedan. Can't wait!

Congrats Bear, what are you doing with the 335? (A 2 month wait from ready-to-ship to delivery???)
