Drive Moderately -- Malfunction Fuel System

Hello, I need some help.

I purchased a 4/10 build 550i (USA) a couple weeks ago. Everything fine for a week, then I get the "Fuel System Error" Drive moderately full engine power not available.

Car seems okay if I don't go over 2000 rpm, but geez who wants to do that? My car has sport and adaptive drive. There is still power, but I don't know the car well enough to know if is what it really should be or not.

The battery was low when I bought it and I have not hooked it to a charger, but I have not received any battery warnings since. I use premium fuel. (trying to eliminate potential things)

The light/warning message comes and goes as I drive and resets between drives after the ignition is switched on and off.

I searched around and saw a few similar issues, but not exactly mine. Does anyone know what is going on? It is headed in for service, and I would like to be aware because sometimes service is no so coherent or striaght-up regarding such things. Basically, I don't want to hear it's because of the way a drive or something like that.

I don't push the car hard now that the light is on. Before, I pushed it a little, but nothing an oridinary person that just got there hands on it would not do. The light first appeared when I was decelerating to a stop sign to drop my mother off after Easter Brunch. Not exactly spirited driving led up to it.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Fuel pump maybe? Really no point in guessing.
Your car has a problem and I'm sure BMW Service will deal with it. Get it in there as soon as possible.

Okay, I'm at dealership now. I thought there might be other F10 owners that have seen this issue before and have some insight. I will follow up with my findings. Agree fuel pump seems likely. But have not heard much about fuel pump N63 issues.

Diagnostic performed. Car is being kept at dealer overnight to update software on control modules and then take it for a road test. Will follow up with results.

I had "reduced power, call will not start if you shut it off" on the Jersey Turpike 190 miles from home. I called the dealer and had them put a loaner car out for me. Car started after I shut it off (at the dealer) but did not start for the dealer the next morning. They reprogrammed and I have not had a problem since....

Crap, just got the same warning. Turn off, get out, set alarm, got back in and started it... Cleared.

Here is to hoping it does not come back... (fingers crossed).

Thanks for sharing the resolution in your situation (should help if it does come back). Too often the OP never reports back and/or there is no closure.

Thanks for posting this. I had this message occur on two different occasions when the car exceeded 4,000 rpms. Other than the message, there wasn't any noticeable difference in the way the engine performed, but still something that I need to get checked out..... Yet another issue to add to the list of problems with this car (recurring bubbles in tires, battery drain issues, fuel sensor malfunction, and now this).

I had same problem. It then progressed to 4x4 malfunction. I was driving and the car suddenly lost all power and I had to pull over quickly
As momentum was decaying rapidly!

Turned off and started again and had check engine light on. Had car towed and was at dealer for 4 days.

Fuel pump and sensor both failed and were replaced along with reprogramming. Will find out tomorrow.

I had this same problem... see my thread of a similar title.

They replaced both the fuel pumps.

I got the car back, drove it for two days, error came back!

It's going in again later this week. Sigh.

I'm getting pretty tired of the problems with this car. It's a sorry indictment when I enjoy the crappy 328i loaner more than the car being fixed :-P

I'm a winner! I got a Fuel System Malfunction this evening on the way home from work. It happened right after I restarted the engine after checking the mail.

My dealer said it was caused by a faulty low pressure sensor, so they just replaced the sensor.

I just drove home new 2012 535 from dealership. Got it in driveway and it stalled with the same error message. It would not restart. They just took the car with 110 original miles off on a flat bed. Yes, the fuel system is an issue of some sorts. Software or otherwise, this does not bode well with my future with this car. I can still get out while there is time
