01 740i - Valley pan gasket

took my car the dealer (not my indy shop) for an oil change as the BMW dealer does oil changes on saturday and just didnt thave time M-F

they reccomended the valley pan gasket to be replaced? i guess there is a liner that wears out. my indy shop never mentioned this 6 months ago.

1. how many hours is this job typically?
2. the stealer stated $1500-$1800 for this?

I am going to check with my indy shop but any insight on this?

my car's coolant light sems to come on more than it should. I typically top it though

after doing my searching, it is common on our cars, the parts arent the big expense but the labor to get there is. I wonder why the time chain work was done, they didnt just bring it up then when the engine was basically opened up...

I guess within the next month or two I will have it looked it.

I'm at th same point with my '97 740IL. Valley Pan Gasket is a moderately difficult job if your handy. If you do the work yourself, you save well over $800 off of the [ST]ealership price. Valley pans are fairly easy to find on Amazon.com and Ebay. I'd recommend buying the parts and jus paying your mom & pop shop for the labor, provided they specialize in BMWs.

If I do a quick /valley pan gasket in the E39 bestlinks, I find this information which 'should' apply to the E38 as well:

- How to repair V8 poorly designed V8 valley pan gaskets that leak coolant (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)

The Valley Pan job isnt tuff. Just slightly time consuming getting to it is all. If you can follow a set of directions and pictures there are great write ups on e38.org as well.
