My parents own a multimillion dollar business and live in a double wide that they remodeled... Me on the other hand, 20 and have a house three times the size of there's. But it's a house that's been in the family for a long time.

I think you are correct. I know a few people who have money and every single one of them can be described as frugal. However, they all have things they love to spend money on, cars, airplanes, vacation homes, ect. I think the secret is to do what makes you happy within reason and refrain from being excessive. I, like AutoUnion, would have a modest house in a great area and own a bunch of cool cars. Cars are my passion...I do not spend money on much else. So yeah, I could own a couple million dollars worth of cars and live in a house that costs 400k. That is just me.....(for those of you unaware of cost of South Florida real estate 400k is a very modest home in this neck of the woods).
Exactly. Modest house with a large garage. I'm only interested in cars, gadgets, and watches. This is where my money would go. No one needs a 15k sq ft house. Just a waste of money.

Point is, it's his money and that's how he wants to use it. His priorities might be different from yours or mine.

I would be fine with a ranch style with
a basement on acreage, in the boonies. Preferably in the hills.

Now I'm not rich, but I can say that I'm well off and I recently gutted my whole house and renovated it. If you saw my house, you'd see that I don't have some crap McMansion facade, with marble columns and all that crap. I made sure to pay attention to every detail and make the house styled as tastefully as I could. I live in Cliffside Park, most of the city isn't the most expensive place, but a few neighborhoods are priced highly, and mine is one of those and the thing that attracted me to it was the awesome view of NYC and as I plan on sending my kids to private school, I don't care that the town has crap schools. Most rich or well off people don't just go around spending money on crap they don't need. I bought a BMW because I enjoy a fine automobile that is luxury and rides well. I know tons of people who can afford Ferraris but drive a Lexus or at most an Audi.
