Not sure what the cable is- have you traced it back to find the approximate source, or where it travels to?
It does look like its supposed to be connected to the battery box that is directly behind it, towards the firewall. Pop off that plastic box and check the fit/location of it on the battery post. I wouldn't recommend actually connecting it until you find out what it goes to.

Doesn't look like that came from the factory.

Got any aftermarket alarms or gizmos?

Hey Dave, I was at a BMWCCA undercarriage inspection today, and had the pleasure of inspecting a 1995 540i M-Sport (along with a clean e30 M3, an M Coupe, a few e46s, and a few e36 M3s). The 540 was a very sharp car- the interior was mint!

Anyway, he had the same exact small cable disconnected in the same spot, and the car has been running well for several years- he has had no issues. We settled on the premise of, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Check out this diagram though- can you trace it back along the firewall to see if it's bundled with two other cables?

On another note, you may want to get a cap for the AC line too...
