Cool **HELP** is sound to my ears

So I’m in the process of upgrading my speakers in my 2006 325Ci E46 Coupe.

Questions that need your help are as follows:

1. How do you know if you have a HK system or not?
I want to keep the original head deck (looks, nav-no internet needed, cost).

2. Does anyone have a Link to the workshop and operators manual for the Nav MK4?

3. Ive ordered a set of splits for the front and was going to run them off 2400W 4 channel Boss Amp and bridge 2 channels for the Alpine 12” sub.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/190648013...84.m1436.l2649

4. The boss amp sez it has an “Input Sensitivity Selector” so will I need a PAC line output converter?
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280489083...84.m1436.l2649

5. I’m stuck for ideas on the back speakers?
Thinking a second Boss amp and ???

6. What speakers are in the rear armrest area of my coupe?

You`ll know if you have an HK system because the rear deck speakers will say "Harmon-Kardon" on them. If you choose to keep the stock head unit & amp, you`ll have to be careful about impedance-matching the new speakers so they`ll be compatible with the existing system.

Cool

The boss amp mentioned above has the following spec:

Line/Speaker Level Inputs - Separate line and speaker level inputs mean the amplifier can handle high-level signals from receivers lacking RCA outputs.

This means I should not need the "PAC SOEM-4 FOUR CHANNEL PREMIUM LINE OUTPUT CONVERTER" right?

Also with this Amp inbetween my speakers and nav head deck, there shouldn't be a problem with the speakers I choose right?

It`s not something you can learn in 5 minutes, it requires knowledge & planning. Let`s start with "Impedance matching amps and speakers":

So done a quick search and found, "quote"

"On the output side, a loudspeaker may still have a nominal impedance of something like 8 ohms, which formerly would have required having an amplifier output stage carefully matched to 8 ohms. But now with the active output circuitry of audio amplifiers, the effective output impedance may be very low. The active circuitry controls the output voltage to the speaker so that the appropriate power is delivered."
ref: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu...dio/imped.html

This is for general audio so I'm assuming its relevent to car audio also.

am i ready for Lesson #2 Bob?

Planning and assembling a system from well-matched components is still important if you don`t want to spend a small fortune and still have it sound good. It takes an expensive amp to handle the really difficult loads without self-destructing.

Lesson #2:
All electrical devices run on smoke....if you exceed their limits, the magic smoke will get out....
