F30 Wheel Locks

For those of you who have taken delivery of your vehicle, have you purchased wheel locks for your F30? I know some of you have gotten the dealership to throw them in for free. But for the unlucky saps like myself whose dealer is not throwing them in for free, is there a site that sells them? If so what are the specs I should be looking for? Thanks in advance for any help that's provided.

Are they the same as the E9x wheel locks?

I feel sorry for you and your dealer. My dealer JMK BMW throws them in without even asking. Try doing a google search to find out where to purchase them. Good luck

Google search does not return much results. I found a bunch on Amazon and read somewhere that the new F30 uses different bolts than the previous versions. I think the previous ones were M12 bolts. I'd hate to get it on a guess and then realize they were the wrong size/length.

I am not too happy that the dealership is not throwing it in but I cant complain much because first off I got a great deal on the purchase (@invoice price), secondly it costs roughly $50 which is nothing for protecting a car that I paid 55K for. So I didn't press the issue too much and sour a good relationship.

If any of you have bought one, please let me know where you got it from and what the specs are.

The issue is that dealers charge higher when you can get it elsewhere for a better price. I have already asked my dealer to give me a price on it. Its not on their accessories site. I just wanted to get an idea of what others who have bought them paid. The F30 is very new so not many online stores have them yet.

$100 is a rip IMO. That's $25 a piece for 4 bolts!!

Wheel locks provide little protection. A socket, mallet, and wrench easily removes locking wheel locks.

This is not so much for security and protection as it is to being a deterrent as the chances of getting caught while spending more time removing a wheel is more. I guess the point is that it takes longer to steal a wheel with wheel locks than one without.

Just curious if F30 owners who have had their cars delivered have them or not.

Just noticed my order sheet lists wheel locks but they are not on the car, I'll have to call the CA...

locking lugs will deter only a casual thief. you can get a universal removal tool off of amazon for under 40 bucks.

Perfect. This is what I was looking for. I'm assuming you have it on your F30 now and it was a perfect fit?

Not with the tools I outlined:
  • Take mallet and pound the socket over the locking lug nut
  • Use wrench to twist off lug nut
  • Repeat

My brother in law owns a junkyard and uses this technique to quickly remove locking lug nuts.

No, I refused them.

All they accomplish is to slow down the owner when servicing the car, changing wheels, etc.

No thief is even vaguely slowed by a wheel lock.

Not sure how significantly it slows things down. Every car Ive owned with a wheel lock i hand the key at the time of service. Its not any different than when you flip a drill bit from philips to flat head. The small amount of time taken to do that is insignificant to me. Never has a service technician voiced that as a concern either. When you said you refused them does that mean BMW offered it and you still refused to take them? Im sure they wouldnt offer it if there was no value in having them no?

I expect not; it is their job to address the car, not the owner's quirks.

Why keep track of and use a wheel lock when it gets in the way and provides no real world benefit? No bad guy that wants your wheels will even notice they are there. (Does anyone bother to steal stock BMW wheels in any event?)

Quote:

Exactly. I would have tossed them otherwise. This would be an unnecessary waste.

My Z06 came with them stock. I asked for a set of replacement non-locking lug nuts. When swapping wheels and brake pads, replacing rotors etc. I do not want to spend the time playing with such nonsense, especially at the track.

They fit in the same category as carbon fiber spoilers that stick on with double-sided tape; all show, no benefit, silly appearing, waste of money.

I've got mine sitting around somewhere; can't remember if they gave them to me in the trunk or if I had to take them off. They were silly-looking: one chrome cap with another 4 black ones...

For those of us that park in garages, change to winter rims, and actually care about statistics (of stolen rims), they're totally a waste of time.

Yep. They are on there now and fit perfectly. There is a cutout in the trunk toolkit shaped just for the lock.

IMO this is a little like saying why lock the front door to your house if any thief that wants in can kick open the door in five seconds? You lock your front door don't you.

Even given these locks can be defeated, the idea is to make yourself less of an easy target. If my car with locks and your car without locks are in the lot side by side, which car would you rather steal the wheels from.

This argument, while logical, is based on a fundamental misunderstanding. The locks are more than easily defeated; they are irrelevant to a thief. It is the equivalent of claiming money is safe from theft because it has been placed in a plastic ziplock bag. Then again, perhaps the average thief is frightened by a ziplock . . .

This lack of efficacy renders them vastly more bother than they are worth, especially for those of us that work on our own cars.

Buy and install a set if they give you warm and fuzzy feelings, but do not fool yourself into thinking they protect your wheels.

Instead, I suggest putting your energy into choosing where you park.

Why the condescending tone. I have no misunderstanding at all. I like how you avoided answering the question posed around my home door lock analogy and substituted a ridiculous one instead. I will assume from your non-answer you do lock the front door to your house, thus making my point.

That is just fine if you see no value in wheel locks. Others do and for very valid reasons.

Have a nice day.
