Engine smell when it rains

Hey guys. I'm a first time BMW owner. I bought a 530 last week (best car I've ever driven btw).

I'm pretty sure my thoughts are correct on this but I thought I'd ask you guys to reassure myself.

I'm getting a funny engine smell and some steam/smoke after it rains. It doesn't do it any other times. I am assuming that the bottom skid pan is collecting water during the rain and when the engine is running, it's burning this off?

Sorry if it sounds really obvious and stupid but I'm not mechanically inclined. I'm a computer geek. The most I can do is change oil and breaks.

No. Something else is amiss. I get nothing like that after even the most torrential rain.

Perhaps some of the underbody panels are missing? Or rain water is getting in through the top/front somehow?

Remove the micro filters at the base of the windshield and check for water. There are drains there and if they are clogged you will get major problems.

Just checked my micro filters. They are fairly new and clean. I guess I'll just swing by my mechanic next rain.
