Poland Spring Water & NYC

I recently visited NYC for the first time and I enjoyed my stay.

One strange question I have for all you New york city residents is....Why is it that every location selling food and drink only offered Poland Spring water as a bottled water option?

I found this to be very strange, especially since here in So Cal we have hundreds of choices of bottled water. Just curious...

Poland Spring water comes from Maine. They are now owned by Nestle waters, which owns a few other brands (Ozarka water, which I have gotten in TX and OK is also one of their companies.) They probably have a deal with the places you were at, since there are other bottled waters found around NYC.

Probably the cheapest option is my guess. Plenty of other "exotic" water options available, but NYC tap water is pretty damn good.

I do recall a Consumer Reports article comparing NYC water (which is piped in from upstate NY) to several bottled waters, and it won.

Poland Spring's available, just not everywhere. It's for sale all over NJ.

Nestle's owns Perrier, one of our best customers; they market water by various brand regionally to where it's bottled from a spring. Ozarka is big here in the south central US, good stuff!

They are also owned by Nestle...Well actually the spring and 14k acres are owned by a guy named Robert Thomas.

Nestle pumps 301,000 gallons a day out of the spring and they want to up that number by another 1.9MM.

Environmentalists are starting to take a look at the impact of that much water being pumped and its affect on the spring as well as the Hillsborough river.

It's because Howard Stern drinks it.

I'll have to look into that!
I work for Crystal Rock/Vt. Pure Spring Water-but in S.E./N.E. CT., Western R.I. Most of my sales are office/deli coffee, and bottled water coolers, vending-in that order. I'll try to remember to call N.Y. Rep. and see what he says.

I don't like any mineral water, spring or otherwise. What's frustrating is when cheap filter bottled water adds minerals back in "for taste." I don't like that - I want a clean pure taste. Aqua Fina (by Pepsi) is the only big brand I like, but my local grocery store sells filtered bottled water without minerals added and tastes about the same, for only $0.10 a bottle when bought in bulk.

I buy only Poland Spring when I'm out. They taste the best compared to other bottled water. I think many New Yorkers share this "common knowledge". It's the one you reach for in the deli's fridge.

At home I'm using the famed NYC Municipal water that go through my under sink carbon filter.

OK, thanks.

It's a shame people are so uninformed about bottled water. I know that a lot of of those come from municipal water and the source must be posted on the label, in small print size..

Which is why I always sneer when I'm in a restaurant in NYC after they ask me what I'd like to drink and I say water and they try to sell me a bottled water. Most places will give you iced tap water without even asking. Those who try to sell you the bottled water are a little too pushy with that and give you a little argument, "we only have bottled water". What, you don't have faucets in this restaurant??

Some restaurants even go the extra mile and put a closed bottled water or a closed San Pellegrino on your table. ... They put it there together with the bottles of ketchup, mustard, A1, and others. Makes you think its complementary. Or they put it next to the plastic flower. In the few times that I had that experience I tell the waitress to remove it from my table, usually it follows with some arguments from them. "so don't drink it". I tell them that I don't want to stare at the bottle during my whole meal if I am not going to use it. Geez. I can understand if at some place where the municipal waters are tasteless, but in NYC???

I can drink Poland Springs even when it gets warm. Fuji too. So those are my choices when I buy bottled water. For everyday drinking, I use good old NY tap water run through my Brita. The Catskill Aquaduct runs right through my town, and that is what my town uses.
