True, but the only problem is that if you don't change the fluid, the lifetime of the transmission is much shorter. Seriously, BMW says you do not have to change the transmission fluid, but many people "in the know" with some technical expertise do not agree with that, and believe the transmission fluid should be changed at periodic intervals, such as every 50K or so. |

Im curious how a gas filter would effect the transmission problems the people in this thread are having?
Hint.... it doesnt

Also just 2 cents added to this very old thread that resurrected. The people having their speedometer quit working and the trans going into limp mode. The speedometer is the hint to the fix. The sensor that handles the speedometer is the cause of the limp mode. Not the transmission itself, well not the internal parts.

The fuel filter is not going to fix trans problems.

I think the point is that it fixes problems that may *appear* to be transmission problems with similar symptoms but are actually fuel delivery problems.

Research places that sell/discount BMW parts- these are BMW dealers with internet storefronts...BMW of South Atlanta an GetBMWParts.com come to mind. See what their best prices are for a factory remanned unit. Call them, talk to them... usually can do a little better than the web. Especially if you dont sound like an idiot. THEN, go to your local dealers. Not necessarily the DBs in the SF bay area, maybe have to go to Stockton, Roseville or Niello or Pleasanton (maybe not)...see if they will meet it. if they say "you have to add shipping', reply 'shipping is a wash with tax' Worked twice for me out of three tries- once I had to collect an Infiniti Q45 tranny from the truck depot. Failsafe
Rachaelsx5, sorry about the problem you are having, I am going down the same road right now with my x5, the bad thing is I am actually a certified tech and have been for 25 years, so here we go: change your fluid every 100k and don't buy bmw fluid at $200 a gallon, go to a parts store and get synthetic trans fluid, ESSO is recommended but I use Mobil. as far as the fail safe goes, have someone scan your x5 and find out what code is stored in the trans ecm, that should point in the direction you will have to go. DON'T go to the dealer, find a trans shop that deals with foreign (European) vehicles. When you find out what code is in it post that code and I might be able to tell you what it needs. ( and to all the people that post a bunch of mumbo jumbo- QUIT, this site is supposed to help like minded bmw enthusiasts out, if you think your car make is better, then start your own site, and if you don't know how to work on a car and never have then you should post on the home shopping network, thanks)

I had the same problem on my 2003 X5 E53, the dealer told me I had to replace the ABS module and the EGS. Then I took it to another regular mechanic and he replaced the MAF sensor and the O-ring on engine air intake. This was 2 months ago since then I never had any problems. Trans fail safe never came after that repair.
Hope this was helpful. |

It is possible. If the engine has no power, the transmission fail safe will show up.

"but i heard from somebody that BMW has a lifetime transmission fluid?? "
Yep, that's right. Instead of changing the fluid they just have the mob whack you! BMW reversed that and said it should be changed at 100K. I do it every 30K or so. |
