E90/E92/E93 M3 (2008 - 2014)
4th generation E90 M3 sedan, E92 M3 coupe and E93 M3 convertible. The last of the naturally aspirated M3s, powered by a 4.0 liter V8 making 414hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

E92 M3 front fogs?

Hi all:

I recently did the headlight switch mod to enable my rear fogs on my 2011 E92 M3 and was wondering if our cars are wired for front fogs.....I modding my switch, I also enabled the front fog switch to work as well.....Would be neat if the wiring was present so that aftermarket front fogs can be hooked up to the factory wiring....any ideas out there....thanks

I doubt there's wiring. There's no factory application for front fog lights. The rears are available outside of the US that's why the mod is available............Phil

I am thinking that the E92 M3 uses the same wiring harness as the E92, which has front fogs as standard equiptment.....that's why I asked.....

Even if the harness is there, I'm curious as to where you're going to hang the fog lights?

Also, a bit curious on the rear fog mod. Hopefully you wired up just the driver's side fog and not both as many mistakenly do?

I just modded the switch which activates both lights......oh well.....probably too much work to de-activate the passenger side.....

Not sure where I can hang fogs actually....but curious if the wiring is there....maybe sacrifice some brake duct cooling space....probably not as important in normal day to day street driving....

There are no brake ducts. The driver side scoop is for the air intake and the passenger side scoop collects air for the oil cooler. I wouldn't mess with either.

Oh, I did not know that....I thought it was similar to the E46 M3 where those were brake cooling ducts(at least that's what I thought)..anyway, good points....I agree, would not want to block the oil cooler or the air intake....oh well......Will need to refrain from driving in the fog...

BMW uses both rear lights as fogs, as you probably know..

Having several years driving in the UK, I'm personally fine with having two lights.

I get that other brands use one light, which is fine also.

Either way, the point is to be seen so you don't get rear ended.

No, actually I wasn't aware of that. I've bought about 7-8 European cars/SUVs in the past 15 years or so and all but the M3 (my only BMW) had a rear fog light. They all had the blanks for fog lights on both sides (due to right hand vs. left hand drive configurations) but only activated the light on the driver's side. The reason has to due with research done by Fulcrum Insurance and Mercedes as I recall and what they found was that in heavy fog when a driver runs up on the rear of a slow or stopped car their natural inclination is to do an emergency swerve into the opposite lane (the one on the driver's side) so in having a single fog light on that side the potential rear end collision is avoided as someone swings around and misses the slow/stopped car (hopefully not having a head-on with someone else.)

As I recall they found that two fog lights were less effective (don't know why - maybe it just gives you a few more seconds of indecision before you plow into the slow/stopped car or you're more likely to think they're tail-lights? Not sure why but the numbers showed a single light was more effective which is why Volvo, Saab, etc. only use one.)

Installed front fogs.

Yes, front fogs are doable and I consider essential for NW weather and road conditions. I started the project by following the DIY for activating the rear fog lights and went ahead and enabled the front switch as well. I then installed the new lights in the felt boxes. Easy access by removing a few screws and popping out. I then took the car to Car Toys in Portland, OR for wiring. They informed me that the factory front fog switch is incomplete internally so they installed the aftermarket switch that you see on the left of the main switch. The system works great. Just respect curbs!
