Test drive

My CA just let me know they received an X1 tonight and I'm scheduled for a test drive at 4:00 tomorrow. Very excited I'll post the results. It's a 28 xDrive.

make sure you test it for a few hrs in the city and motorway. ours seemed during the 40mins test, during the first week of ownership we found it has problems with vibrations, instability at 80km+ and horrible vibrations in the steering wheel..

I drove the X1 today, 28 xDrive. White with black Nevada leather. Premium package. I thought it looked great and the form fit and function looks well thought out. Since it didn't have the technology package, there is a quasi glove compartment filling the void where the display would be. Also, there is a little analog gauge on the dash that shows your mpg as you're driving. It literally bounces all over since driving in the city acceleration changes as conditions do. On the highway it is relatively steady. There was also a digital display that tells you the mpg.....it doesn't react to every change so it is less annoying. Not sure why it has both. The storage area wouldn't fit my golf clubs unless I folded down the rear seats. As far as the drive goes, I found it very responsive and comfortable to drive. The acceleration was good but I thought a little lacking.....until I looked down and noticed I was going 90 mph. I was trying to accelerate from 45 mph to 75 mph and it got there so quickly I didn't realize it. I also accelerated on an on ramp to the highway and it went from 5 mph to 65 mph extremely fast. My impression in the vehicle is more of a sports car than a SAV. It sits low which is nice, but in Syracuse it would be great for our winters and with folding the seats down, you can fit the occasional cargo in there. I'm not sold yet but I liked it.

There are expecting a 35 xDrive in a week so I'll drive that next.

Did you notice how heavy or light it was to turn the steering wheel?

At slow speeds there was a lot of resistance. It was enough to catch my attention. Once you were driving faster, the steering felt light and "normal". Hope that helps.

was the car equipped with Servotronic steering?

Interesting that the video display area was a storage compartment. I though there would be a smaller display there for the idrive. Where is the screen for the standard idrive?

I thought the iDrive was standard but it isn't.

Seems as if we tested similar cars. I concur with your impressions.

I felt it drove well. At first I missed the single-stage turbo kick, but I too noticed I was going much faster than I thought (was quickly at 90mph on 55mph road).

Thats a big surprise and contrary to what the Standard and Optional Equipment publication indicates. Both the June 11 and July 12 revisions indicate the same, "iDrive system with on-board computer and Controller, and 8 programmable memory buttons".

I guess this will be a way out if any decides against their preorder. For me the storage compartment is a welcome addition.

I believe the CA said it he iDrive comes with the technology or navigating packages. I reconfigured the vehicle on the site and the interior picture of the car removes the iDrive display if you don't pick those packages.

perhaps the idrive display is in the gauge cluster? Is there an idrive knob by the center cup holder?

How is the Start/Stop feature in X1? I've heard that it's kind of jerky and useless from drivers of 3er and 5ers.

The on/off was very jerky. There is an on/off switch for it. Also when you change the transmission to "sport" is automatically is turned off.

There isnt if you dont get the tech package. Noticed that in Toronto Dealership a month ago. Instead, it's just a coin holder of some sort.

Also there is no knob for the iDrive to answer that question.

I've also heard that if you turn th Start/Stop off, it will turn itself on again after the car past 10 mph. So you may have to turn it off constantly during traffic hours. Is this so?

Having driven many start/stop rentals in Europe, I personally found the X1's version to be fine.

I'd even call it smooth, the opposite of jerky.

Caveat is this was from only one test drive but with some rush hour stop/go - yet I felt it was not only fine, but much less intrusive than prior cars in Europe.

I didn't find that the on/off feature turned off after reaching 10 mph. Once I shut it off it was off. I think the main thing I've discovered is this vehicle is less expensive because it doesn't have all the electronic gadgets. Once those are added, it's the same price as an X3 or a 328. I started out wanting an X3 and thought the X1 would be a lower cost alternative. It really doesn't provide the SAV function I wanted. As I've gone through this process being honest with myself I really want a sports car. The SAV need was me compromising with wanting a BMW but wanting something practical. I'm still going to drive the 35 xDrive next week but I'm starting to lean toward the 335ix.

After feeding off this forum for past 5 years, I feel its about time to start making contribution.

I test drove two different X1 (both xdrive28i) at different dealers. The first one I test drove was right after I drove the X3. The difference in handling and responsiveness was night and day between X3 and X1. The X1 drives almost as good as my 3 series for obvious reasons. Before I test drove either car, I was dead set on buying X3, as I was opposed to the smaller interior and lack of cargo space in the X1. After I drove both the cars, I could not get myself to like X3 any more. Granted it has more room, is the best in its class, smoother ride, etc. etc. But, if I wanted a comfortable ride, I would rather buy a lexus. Anyways, so I started thinking about options and even considered going for 2013 3 Series.

So, I went back to another dealership and test drove the new 3 series and the X1 again. Now I must admit, the 3 series drives better than X1 and has slightly more room on the inside(atleast it seems like it). However, X1 with almost similar driving characteristic and given the roads in new jersey plus the winter in north east makes it a very appealing choice. Then I started looking at the pricing of both the vehicles. After adding all the options, the difference in price for a 3 series and X1 was considerable (atleast for me). So, now I am almost close to pulling a trigger on X1. All of a sudden, X1 doesn't look all that small anymore.

Additional Comments:-
a) It doesnt matter if u call it a station wagon, suv or a cross over. The car looks pretty good from most angles.
b) It is definitely not a family SUV and people lookin for a sports activity are better sticking with X3 or X5.
c) People who prefer the hatchbacks and want a higher ground clearance, yet do not want the boxy swaying SUVs should definitely consider X1.
d) If having a decent space in the rear is number one priority then dont even consider X1.
e) Yes, its looks much smaller in person than it does in pictures.
f) The start/stop is much more refined than what I expected to from reading all the posts.

Let me know if you have any questions. Will be happy to answer.

Autotrader is starting to get some listings with images. No iDrive controller on this one.

That looks just like the one I drove. I worked the configuration on BMW USA and without the technology package or Nav, no display.

You only get iDrive if you order the technology package. Otherwise you have two smallish storage compartment where the screen and iDrive controller would be. I really think the technology package is a must because of this, but YVMV...

Thanks,
dr

Does this mean that the Standard and Optional Equipment publication by BMW is flat out incorrect in stating that this is a Standard feature for all X1 models?
