Well, reading further on, perhaps the cosmetics are different. I doubt the bit about the suspension, though.... I think you can research it on their site.
I checked the brochure for 08, 09, and 2010. The M Sport Package (2010) has "retuned sport suspension calibration" whereas the Sport Package has "Sport suspension calibration." I doubt it makes too much difference for my driving except I like the extra cosmetic stuff for the 2010 M Sport Package and the new i-drive.

Get the 2010 550i with m-sport, this is not the same as sport package.
the suspension is different. the car has all the m-logo's inside, etc.
looks like m5 but with exhaus on one side.

Would 45K for an 08 550 be a good deal? It has Sport package, Value package, winter package. It has 20K+ mileages.

My 540i M-Sport was smashed by someone from rare on highway last week. The insurance claims it is a total loss. I tried several models in last two days and only found the 550 Sport is closed to what 540i M-Sport in handling but still a bit less in my taste. M-Sport package is tighter and more precise, thus more confident to drive for me. I obviously did not try M5/M3 which does not fit the purpose for normal use. Like the interior of newer version of the 550 though.

John,
I can only tell you from my experience when trying to find a 550i last month. Is this manual or automatic? For manual, it's NOT a bad deal. I saw a CPO 2008 550i that in addition to what you listed had logic7, HUD, and comfort access for 43k and one w/o HUD for about 41k. Both had about 24-27k mileage.

For automatic, I found the range jumps around a bit. I've seen as low as 36k for 08 550i automatic. More and more 08s are coming back from lease so good luck with your search.

If you insist on m-sport, you'll have to wait a couple of years when 2010s come back from leases.

It is manual. I think the price is OK but the dealer wouldn't give up the price just a bit and I don't feel like to buy it for just the asking price. It is more on psychology acceptance thing.

Thanks,
-John

I have not tried 2010 model yet as it is out of my comfortable zone to justify for the price. I think i know exactly what you mean as I have been driving M-Sport 540i for long and this M-Sport package spoils me quite a bit for my current car choice. I tested drive lot cars last week: 335xi, 545, 535xi, 535i all in sport-package. None of them is close to what I had for the M-Sport 540i.

I test drive the 550 and it meets my bottom line in terms of handling but can't settle down a price. I offered $43K this morning and dealer still would not accept, am I too greedy or is the dealer is getting greedy?

Thanks,
-John

I've driven 2008 sport and 2010 m-sport 550i. I'm not a good driver and I didn't push the cars to their limits so i couldn't tell any difference.

I felt there are more difference in the interior such as the m steering wheel, the headliner and of course the idrive is different but that's more because of 2010 vs 2008 instead of m-sport package.

For 43k I think the dealer is just too greedy. Wait and see. Is it a BMW dealership? I've found some BMW dealership not willing to negotiate on price much on CPO cars but I still think 43k is a fair offer. Good luck and hope you get it.

BTW, what color combination? Sorry if you mentioned it before.

The color is Carbon black with a bit bluish in I think. I will wait and see a bit.

Let let you know the ending result. At certain point, I think if I did not get 550 I might just pick up a Honda accord for a few years and get the 2011 year mode, the body line is better than E60 in my option. I also love e39 body style although I am not old man.

Thanks,
-John

The dealer won't drop the price for even 1K so I walked away from the car. Still it is a nice car but can't justify to pay $44k~ for this 08 550.

I end up an new Mazda 3 GT Sport Hatchback and impressed with the handling. Sure, nothing can compare with an BMW.

I did not realized and were not 100% appreciated my totaled 540i MSport until I tested drive so many cars out there (mostly are BMWs). I know I will miss the 5s but in this economics, having a car to drive is blessing to me now.

3) i think (but i'm not sure) that the 2010 550i m-sport also has some minor trim details different from the '08 and '09 models: I believe the steering wheel is different, and i think there are more m-labels in the car (dead pedal, door jamb) and the anthracite (dark gray) headliner is also i believe 2010 only.

If i were you, i'd take a look at 08 and 09 m-sport 550is that are available to see whether you care about the non-hd based idrive (some have complained that it's really slow compared to the hd-based idrive) and whether you notice the different interior trim items.
thats a lie my 2006 550 came with the mtech kit

not that it matters now since you got the Mazda but $45k was too high for an 08 as that is an 09 price range ( dealer cpo of course ) otherwise non cpo 09 should be around $34k/$36k

The previous owner might have installed that kit as the aerodynamic package is not listed as an option until the 2008 models. Shrugs who knows.... It coulda came with a lifetime supply of Starbucks coffee for all we know....

excellent post
helped me to choose the right car which is 2010 550i M Sport

from VIN decoder the difference is like this

2008, 2009 has

P7MPA SPORTPAKET Sports package

2010 has

P337A M SPORTPAKET M Sports package

its the same as to say 2002 540i has M sport where the only true M Sport was for one year - 2003 540i
LOL

Um, ALL LCI 550's have the exact same M-Sport package. Anyone who tells you different is wrong in terms of mechanicals. The 2010 adds "M" badges on the door sills and steering wheel, other than that they are identical. Functionally and stylistically identical (I am not a fan of "M" badges on a non-M car anyway, so it doesn't matter to me, the missing badges just keep me further from "poser"). The only functional difference between 2008-09 and 2010 is the iDrive, 2008-09 have CCC NAV (DVD based) and 2010 has CIC NAV (hard drive based). The 2009 models have the same iDrivee controller as the 2010, so no difference there, personally I prefer the 2008 version with fewer buttons. What is the point of having an iDrive if you're going to add just as many buttons as any other car, eh, I prefer the "minimalist" console/dash.

LOL, the only upgrade from the 2008 to the 2009 is the iDrive controller with more buttons.
Disregard BMW part numbers. There are typically many, many part numbers for the exact same part (go ahead, look for a replacement CCC unit and see what I mean, there are about 80 part #s for it).
The 2010 M-sport added M badges, that's it. Add to that the CIC NAV and the delusional somehow believe it's a completely different car - it's not.

Um, no it didn't. The M-Sport kit, the one where the M-Tech kit was standard, is an LCI ONLY option. There is no such thing as a pre-LCI car with a factory M-Tech unless it was a dealer installed option.

Technically, yes, since the OEM 172 19 inch wheels were ONLY available on the 2008-10 M-Sport cars. Pre-LCI 550s came with OEM 124 18 inch wheels on the sports package.
On the E60 only 2 models came with factory 19 inch wheels: The M5 andd the LCI 550 M-Sport. Nothing else came with 19's. Even the 535 LCI M-Sport cars came with 18s

Have to admit those three 3 years were nice. Are the new F10 models receiving the LCI up grades like the E60s! I remember in 2008 when I first saw these M/Sport packages on the 550s. I was in a 530 '06. I inquired in 2010 about one of them and the cost was 40-45k then. I was definitely depressed I could swing it. Then 3 years goes by I was looking at an '07 Boxster S for the same cost 28k and by happen chance I saw the 09 5iver! Saw it at 1:00 am the nite before I was going to look at the Porsche. Next morning I called the dealer and gave a credit card deposit without even seeing it. That evening I drove it home. That was Dec. 2013. Now I put 8k on her all highway and it feels like its a special day every day. Those three 3 '08 -'10 years sure hit the mark. To me this car drives like a 3. I was in a newer F10 and Boy that thing feels and looks big. Drives like a big sedan too. Haven't driven a newer 550, but I bet it doesn't handle like a E60 550!

First, are the F10s getting LCI upgrades? Yes, they are, new lighting and packages are available for the 2014 models.
I agree, I like the E60 M-Sport, in fact there is not another body kit for the E60 I like more than M-Tech (which is rare for me, I usually say OEM sucks, that's why I mod the hell out of every car I have owned).
I have driven the F10 535, 550, and M5. They are sporty, but they do feel large. I was actually looking or an F10 when I got my 550. That's why I drove them all, including a buddy's M5, which I loved, but $127k wasn't happening right now. My biggest problem with the F10 is the interior, the tunnel where your legs go is narrower, and there is less headroom than in the E60. Since I am 6'4" that doesn't work well for me.
