Oil Flow Through Single Vanos on 1997 Z3 M52 Engine

Hi Guys,

I don't have an air test fixture for testing flow through the Single Vanos on my 1997 Z3
M52 engine, so I thought I would see if some of the Vanos Gurus on this site might know the answer.

Question: When the Vanos solenoid is energized and in the outward position pushing the solenoid piston and spring inward, does the oil being diverted push the actual/main Vanos Cam piston in or out? Also, when the Vanos piston is pushed outward on the camshaft, is it advancing cam timing, or retarding it?

Thanks in advance
1997 BMW Z3 2.8 Automatic.
