Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2012 - Jeremy Foley's Massive Evo Crash

Jeremy Foley and his co-driver go off at Devils Playground at exactly the same spot Bobby Regester did last year. They weren't quite as lucky. Both were taken to the hospital but all I heard was that one of them had serious but not life-threatening injuries. I certainly hope it wasn't too serious.

That crash makes Bobby Regester crash in 2011 look like a fender bender.



Jeremy and Yuri were on the Today's Show this morning and will be on Inside Edition tonight along with Piers Morgan at 9pm on CNN.

Holy crap! Why is there no guardrail there again?

Auto racing is not the primary pupose of that road and as on the Mt. Washington Auto Road one reason they don't have guardrails is so the plows can push the snow over the side in the winter.

Oh. My. GOD! What an horrific crash! I thought I was watching two drivers getting killed in there. Glad to read that they are both out of the hospital by now?

I've driven up that road a couple times. Higher up, the road isn't paved and isn't nearly as wide. Kinda spooky in a regular car, can't imagine racing up it.

I hear that on the way down they have checkpoints where they stop you, read the temp of your brakes with an IR gun, and depending on what it reads, they make you wait until they cool down. Did you experience these checkpoints?

For those that are interested, here are a couple vids of the record holder (overall, any vehicle, broke it this year) driving up it. These though are from when he set the 2wd record a few years ago. The first is the edited, abridged, Hollywood/MTV version. The second is from the front of the car only, with the smaller window showing mostly steering wheel. You get some occasional asphalt screeching, but the best parts imo are when the nose is pointed extremely inward to the turn, during the drifts. You can listen to him repeatedly blip the throttle, and sometimes make out the car repeatedly going closer to the edge, and away from, during the very same turn with his throttle blips.

My friend, and sort of my mechanic, got a ride with him in a truck, and he said he was drifting in it like it was totally normal, carrying on a normal conversation, and my friend was freaking out, lol.

They race everything up there, bicycles, running on two feet, even semi tractor trailers!! Ok, in the third video, it looks like the same person in the OP Evo crash, Jeremy Foley, was riding with the current semi record holder when they had (a much more mild) crash into a Pikes guardrail (so apparently they do exist, eh).

He really hit that turn at speed - hard to judge what went wrong from the few seconds of video, but man, what a crash.

The rest of it is physics at work ... those two guys are lucky they're ok, but if you really look at it, the car was allowed tp dispose of its energy over a long period of time on what was a relatively gentle and obstruction-free slope. Violent as it appeared, there were no sudden stops or blunt releases of energy.

you mean you don't drive like that with all the safeties off when you're have a blast and wanting to stretch the legs of your 335i?

The do have break check points but I think it was just visual last time I was there. "93". I see now they paved the upper portion which ruined the track in my opinion. Last time I was there was the week before the race. Some guy was practicing illegally and shattered the windshield on my brand new car with rocks. Park Rangers ran him down and brought him to the front gate where we were waiting. Some Oriental guy got out apologizing profusely and paid us $ 500 for the damage.

I don't know what you consider as stretching legs, but the turns that are as close to hairpin as some of the ones at Pike's that I can think of near me are probably 30 mph (or a lot less) zones, and very residential. I'm talking about the screeches like the hairpin turn halfway through, I wouldn't even know how he pulls that off. So, no, not like that ever, pretty much. Safeties are almost always on, I never dump the clutch, I never power shift, and I don't have an LSD. I guess screeching is dependent on the actual tires being used. Mine (PSS) chirp often on acceleration, and I try to feather it at times in anticipation of possibly losing some traction. However, I'm not a skilled driver, and don't pretend to be. Maybe you can teach me?

Geez. Thanks for the reply, I wonder what they're particularly looking for with a visual. Do rotors get some particular sheen, discoloration, or something right before failure, I'm just wondering.

I drove the Peak last year. I have a healthy respect for the trek as I lost a good friend and her dad to the Peak in 1978. She was killed while thrown around the cabin lacking a seat belt much less child seats. Her dad went through the canvas top and snapped his neck. Their mother lived alone next door with her sheep dog until she moved.

They have a checkpoint (only one) mid mountain (downhill) or so. They throw an IR temp sensor at your rotors and will 'sternly suggest' that you pull to the side to let them cool.

Some jackwagon in an Audi passed me and my rental Mustang within a few turns of the peak. When we got to the check point, he was waved off. The ranger (or whatever) shot my rotors and said, "98 degrees. Good job. Really good job."

Jackwagon bought his girl some treats while I headed to celebratory Rudy's BBQ near the base.

crazy azz crash, looks like roll cage barely did its job, this is btw my favorite pikes peak video from back in the day when it was not paved yet.

He hit some huge ass rocks after falling off Ouch that must have hurt
