AGA PIPE & Water Pump

I dropped the car off today to have my coolant leak looked at. The shop called and told me that both the coolant pipe and water pump needed to be replaced. He said there was coolant remains at the weep hole and the water pump needed to be replaced due to an internal seal that goes bad.

Estimate : Water Pump and AGA Pipe w/ 10 hrs labor 2397.60 with tax.

So, I am thinking to myself that a member here had said that when the coolant pipe goes the motor just floods the cars weep hole and I would really know if this was the case. I asked INDY to just give me a quote for the just the water pump.

Estimate: Water Pump, Gasket, two elbow tubes with 5.5 hrs labor 889.00 with tax

I remembered that the water pump I looked at online was like 200.00 plus the gasket, I think the tubes are 19.00 each plus tax and at 100.00 per hour I am missing something.

So, I called my other Indy, He stated that the he could get the water pump installed for 600.00 plus tax, so I made my appointment with him and picked my car up this afternoon. Indy #2 that will be working on the car said that he has yet to replace the coolant pipe in the car. He preformed my pre-purchase inspection last year and he just looked over the car last month for my oil chance.

Now, 2400 for the water pump and the aga pipe is a good price, but I just can not see them both being the problem right now?

Am I crazy????

Well, No, we are saving up to adopt so spending the extra money is not an option.

Today I was really ready to throw in the towel and take my loss. My boss and I went to lunch and he stated that the trade light had come up on the dash.

My wife is totally pissed about the repair as it is dipping a small tad into our savings and I am just realizing that its a passion driving this adventure nothing else.

If this is not your daily driver it should be ok to do the expansion pipe alone.

I am loosing about 2 cups of coolant per week. I can drive the car 7 days and the low coolant light will come on, I top the car off and it's another week.

I was told this doesn't sound like the coolant pipe?

What situations permit coolant to escape the weep hole? Is it only due to the coolant leaking from the front or back coolant pipe?

Sounds like the weep was a planned escape route, for what circumstance?
What is the function of the weep hole design?

Info needed..

I just want to get a grasp on the perpose, and the logic behind the design, just how I roll. I will search for an awnser and post my own results.

The photo from my other thread looks like the weep hole on the upper part of the water pump.

Can someone confirm that the coolant weep hole is on the left side of the engine block under and to the right side of the valve cover and not dead center of the motor?

Sorry for all the questions

Yep, this is shot from the left side looking directly towards the center of the water pump. I am looking into where the weep is located on the water pump.

I read several topics on this. This one is the photo I am referencing with the weep at the head not in the center.

If you guys need an expert shop that designed a far superior expansion pipe then any of the cheap knock off competition then go w/ AGA's coolant expansion pipe! Attached are some competition pics and most importantly the website and detailed video of the designer/owner's (Martin) video of installation. 6-8 hours if your good imo. Saves HUGE money and is better than OEM! They also field specific pipe installation questions. These guys are very busy and please don't call them w/ stupid basic questions. My 545i (E60 N62) will need this repair at some point in the next 30K!
