I wish there were more 6-speed manual M6/5s out there!
I always toy with the idea of an M5/M6. I want a 6-speed though. The mechanics of a SMG (long term reliability) bother me ... also its just plain and simple not as much fun as a traditional 6-speed manual
Im completely torn on what my next purchase is going to be. Do i get CPO 335xi 6speed, do i get a M5/M6 if I can find one, do i settle for a SMG, do i order a new m3 coupe, ugh decisions decisions decisons... may just sit on it for now and save more money.w |

Have you driven the SMG? Admittedly it does take some getting used to, but after I drove it for a week I fell in love with it. Now I can't see myself ever driving something without an SMG or DTC type transmission with paddles!

Oh and if you drive an M6 for a month, trust me, a 335 is not going to do much for you. The M3 is definitely a good option though. You will sacrifice some luxury for a bit more performance in the twisties. The M3 also seems to be more reliable.
For me the M6 is the perfect driving experience. It can transform from a comfortable cruiser to an absolute maniac. The scream of the V10 at 8,000 RPMS is just crazy!

I can't even imagine what yours is like with the top down and the Eisenmann screaming!
It's not that the 335 is a bad car, it's just that the overall experience of the M is on a completely different level. The looks of the car, the sound of the engine/exhaust, the rush of passing 8,000 RPMS, the leather wrapped cabin, and of course knowing you are in a V10 beast! Driving experience is of course subjective, but for me this car is about the best BMW has to offer.

If it is going to be your DD then I would say go with and SMG transmission. I Don't mean to be rude but why are you even thinking about a 335xi? A 335xi and a M3 or M6 is like trying to compare a Ferrari F430 to a V-8 Ford Mustang! Two totally different worlds. David I wished you lived closer so we could ride together. Nothing compares to an M6 with Eisenmann top down doing a buck 20 chasing another M6!!! ![]()

Had driven a 6MT 545i for the last six years, and believed I wanted a 6MT ///M car also, but now that I have the SMG, I am getting used to it and believe that it was the right choice. One thing to keep in mind is the speed of the shifts is directly related to the throttle position. The actual programs (S1-S6) have some bearing, but the major influence is the throttle position. Thus, even in M-mode, S5/6, you will still get lazy shifts if you are using light throttle to accel leisurely, and in P400, Comfort, S3, you will get quick shifts if the throttle is floored. Even in D mode on the freeway loping along in 7th gear, if you need to pass and push the pedal, you will be in 5th in no time blasting your way to 100mph. The SMG is certainly smoother in all situations than I ever was with my left foot. The rev-matching blips on downshifts are sublime.

If I were you i would sell the Z06 and get and M6. Guaranteed to have more fun in the M. Before I bought my M6 i was looking at a red 08 Z06 and just didn't fall in love with her after the test drive and for the kind of money these cars are I couldn't pull the trigger without loving the car. Don't get me wrong the Z06 is a beautiful looking car you just see so many of them and with the stock vette's driving around the average person can't tell the difference. Keep us updated on what you end up going with. Cheers

I actually averaged 20.4 MPG this weekend on a three hour interstate trip, but over the last 4-5000 miles of city driving I was getting 10.5.

335xi in 6-speed drove very nice. the M is a big purchase to make without my life being 100% settled... especially since I already have a 500+ hp sports car I would hate to buy it then change work locations and have to sell it, then get settled then rebuy one . if you follow> ! |
