2013 X5 Diesel: What will the true story be? VOTE

I would be surprised if they join 8AT with M57 at the end of the production cycle (only for a few months and only for US spec diesel)

I drive craploads of AT gearboxes... five, six, seven and eight-speed units. I still find the best AT on the planet is the 6AT in the X5 35d (the seven and eight-speed units are quicker and more efficient, but they shift too damn much). I knew about the upcoming 8AT, but I still jumped on the 6AT.

And, with regards to M57 vs. N57... BMW is only "cheapening" its engines these days (witness the N54 to N55). Just sayin'...

I have been a long time BMW owner...and still am. However, I made the choice to move one of my cars to an SUV diesel. Tried out the X5 35d and the new Porsche Cayenne Diesel this week...just arrived at the dealer. It took 5 mintues to decide...the Cayenne was smooth, powerful, huge pana roof, nice lines...and so I bought one! The 2012 X5 35d seemed dated, not as nice interior..and not as fun to drive as the Cayenne. Loaded with Premium Plus package, Bose updraded stereo, 19" Cayenne Sport wheels and skid pad...$74,000 MSRP....The dealer got 3 Cayenne Diesels in...two where pre-sold and I bought the 3rd...

Both of our dealers received the Porche Cayenne Diesel's on yesterday. Going to go test drive one today. Comparing that with the X5d. Really like the X5d, but intrigued by the Cayenne Diesel.

The Cayenne Diesel is quite good. Drive both back-to-back.

I was at the local Porsche dealer about a week and a half ago and they said that they were already at port, but Porsche was holding them until they had enough to send out to everyone

Ha. Strict MSRP on Diesels. I just called my local dealer and the TDIs are in transit to dealer right now.

I'm flying to Alaska on Monday for the official media launch trip. I could save some time and drive one at my local dealer...

Nice time of year up there -- too early for snow and too late for the gnats. Say Hi to Sarah if you are passing by her house. Is there really a Porsche store in AK? Oh well, the press tender/recovery vehicle will most likely be a 4x4 Superduty 350 Diesel anyway -- to pull the scribes out of the tundra when they get their stringback driving gloves caught on a steering wheel stalk.

Ha ha... I have been to 47 of the 50 states, so I am really excited about Alaska (even more than a European trip!). We are staying at the "Captain Hook Hotel" and then heading up to the "Alyeska Resort" (in Girdwood) the second night. It's a whirlwind tour, one that will tease me to come back!

Yea as we probably know its November at the earliest. Expecting the same 6 speed transmission, same power train.

Its just easier in terms of cost.

Background:

M57 (launched 98 and N/a on the F-series platform, replaced with N57)
Estimated time till F15 X5=approximately a year


As per my knowledge the, M57 was never mated with an 8spd, so it wouldn't make sense for them to mate that engine, which is about 2 decades old (on its way out F-series cars have been switched to the N-generation engine) and have to design a custom shift map for this particular engine, for one particular model year. Its just cuts into BMW profit margins.

I would love to have a M57, with an 8 speed, or even an E70 with an N57 8 Speed, but I dont think it would be possible. Just gonna have to wait and see!

Um... Has BMW announced the '13 X5 35d yet (I don't follow all the news)? The '14 MY is all-new... but I am still betting the '13 35d gets an 8AT... it was supposed to be in the '12 (I know for a fact)!

Looks like the VA(P)G oilers have now gone to an 8 speed with a 240 hp diesel for '13. Makes the T-egg the bargain of the bunch, if you only need two rows.
