128i brakes question

Hello,
Am new to the 1'er family so my questions come more to learn about the personalities about the car than complaints.

Why does it seem the 128i creates so much more brake dust than any other vehicle I have ever known. Also it seems the front rotors are wearing faster than most others with 13k on it. The car definitely stops better than most and am really happy with the performance.

Is this why BMW requires rotors & pads to be replaced together?

BMWs use pads that are good at a lot of things including generating brake dust. It is not unique to the 1 series, it is typical for BMWs. Automatics wear brakes faster than manuals so my guess is you have an automatic. But regardless of transmission, BMWs generate more than typical amounts of brake dust. So we need to wash our cars more often.

Most car manufacturers want you to replace rotors with pads because it is a good way to be sure your rotors are not too thin or otherwise unsuitable for continued use. The alternative is to measure the rotor and if it is thick enough, have it trued up and put it back on. BMWs are not atypical with respect to rotor replacement. On lessor cars, I always have just put on new pads. It takes a little while for them to wear to a worn rotor but if you are careful for a little while, it works fine. This should work on a BMW but would not give you the best possible brake performance.

There are many aspects of a BMW that cost more than we are used to (like oil changes). Some of those things also contribute to the superior driving experience. Brakes seem in that category to me. If we want the best performance, we have to be prepared to spend more on the maintenance.

With 40k miles, the BC indicates my brake pads have another 12k left. As JimD said, having a MT makes a difference - and my car is also only driven about 25% in traffic. The dust is the price you pay for BMW brake performance, although some folks have posted that Armor All wheel cleaner helps.
