Transmission x5 2005

Hello everyone, I am new to Bimmerfest. Presently, I have a 2005 x5 3.0 series, and the truck was recently diagnosed with needing a new transmission. A trans. failsafe prompt was indicated while driving, the car was slipping from 4th to 5th gear. In order to buy some time, my mechanic advised to drive the car in the sport mode. The question I have, is my husband was thinking of possibly changing the fluid (50%) as per some other threads have stated, the concern I have will this cause more of an issue, the fluid was 3/4 quarters of a quart low and the fluide was added prior to me driving the car home. Also the quote for a new transmission was $6000, not including labor-does this seem accurate. I apologize for rambling-typical female-sorry. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I would have the transmission fluid and filter changed. See what happens first before having a transmission done. I believe for the 3.0i transmission should be around $3k and with labor $4k tops thats with a 1 year warranty. If you go on ebay and look for a used one then its alot cheaper. Just my thoughts.
