sunroof won't close.... just got the car tonight!

picked up a 2000 328ci tonight. I went to push the dome lights on and I hit the sunroof button. It raised but it wont close. I can push the button towrads the windshield, push the button in and it works.... but sliding the button back towards the rear of the car does not work. So, needless to say it won't close.

I am reading the wiki article I found on the bimmerwiki but thinking it may be as simple as the switch is dirty or bad?

Ideas? I am afraid if I open it more it will be worse... and since we are in a drought it will rain knowing I have the roof open

Pressing the center section of the switch will tilt the rear of the sunroof up. Pushing forward on the switch (sliding it toward the windshield) will close it. Sliding the switch to the rear opens the roof.

Read the E46 Wiki....there`s a link to the owner`s manual.

Okay, that clears it up some. I found the manual..... heading back outside to see what I can do.

Yes we need the rain.... I rather wash the car and rain vs rain while the roof is open haha.

lets complicate this some more :-)

The previous owner says the sunroof DOES NOT work.... it works fine to me and all directions now. However, the sunroof cover that slides seems to be out of the track or something. It will catch with the roof going back then when you close the sunroof you have to work the cover forward almost being able to kink it.

Looking for diagrams now.... if you have one please share!

Read the E46 Wiki linked at the top of the page. It sounds like your sunshade clips are broken and are possibly jamming the track. This is a common problem and fairly inexpensive to fix. The info is in the Wiki.

I am actually having the same problem, and fixing it is fairly easy according to my research right now. Here are links

It's been very hot in California so I will start looking into fixing mine as soon as the weather cools. Good luck!
