Z3 Roadster (E36/7) heated side mirrors

So I was waiting for my wife at the supermarket and when we left the parking lot I noticed by chance that the side mirrors where warm to the touch. Now it was dark, no sun and 76 degrees. When we reached the hacienda, I dug out the owners guide and found that the mirrors will clear frost when the key is in position 2. Obviously there was no frost.
What gives? Anybody have experience with this? At a loss as to why they were on.

Could be wrong, but in my car they seem to be on all the time (when operating).
