Ok so I have a friend (more like loose acquaintance) that was declined by BMW FS on the purchase of an F10...so he went to several banks and got 4 loans at 20k each. He refuses to tell me his interest rates and the payments on each loan and simply declares that being able to walk back into the dealership and pay "cash" a week after getting clowned out of there is well worth it. This is my definition of reckless abandon. He is single, no known kids, rents an apt. Thoughts...

I can't imagine ever owning a car, I have been leasing for 15yrs+. While I agree that it is not the best financial decision, I also had a family member die at a young age and the money he saved - went to his funeral expenses.

BMWs are considered a luxury item. Life is too short not to enjoy the little things. But of course, you need to know your finances, budget and be within your limits.

I am single, no kids, and sold my home in FL in 2006 (before the crash) and very financially irresponsible. But I am happy as a mother #$%@***$, now if I could just get my hair back and lose a few lbs..

The point on region of America and Cost of Living is well made. I've recently been looking at homes in the Bay Area (lightly considering a relocation opportunity). If space aliens moved my house from the ATL to the San Jose area, it would be worth in excess of $4M. That would put a damper in my car slush fund.

My gross income is irrelevant in the equation. What is relevant is what my wife lets me spend of my paycheck.

I moved from Miami to the Bay Area (San Jose) in 2006 ish and I remember being at my girlfriends house and say You paid $600K for this piece of ... (Obviously, I sent flowers ) Here I am 4 years later in Dallas and when I see a house for $200K my first reaction is to question if its in the ghetto... LOL

BTW - for those of you who live in CA... the weather is worth the price difference!!!

I am of the live for today mindset myself. Seen too many of my frugal friends scrimp and save and miss out on life only to have it cut short by an IED. I save some but I won't let my savings plan interfere with my living plan. Hahahahaha! My portfolio lost nearly 30k last year. My BMW didn't depreciate that much!!

A better question might be what percentage of your play money do you spend on car payments. Some people spend thousands a year for vacations, cigarettes, gambling, strip clubs, boat etc. etc. Some people just choose to spend most of their play money on their car, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that if they can afford it.

The question is how long before one becomes prudent. I have seen many wait too long, and that is tragic as well.

I find this statement to be the most accurate piece of the entire thread. I've lived in California my entire life, but have traveled a decent portion of the country. I've yet to find a better spot, weather-wise, to wake up each and every day.

Granted, my idea of great weather isn't everyone's. My wife wants us to "move to a place with seasons (translated - snow and various manifestations of wet)." OY!

This is why we need more regulation in this country! Tax returns should determine if somebody is allowed to make a specific large purchase

Thoughts....yes many of them and none of them polite enough to post here. It is his life, but what he just did is about the dumbest financial decision one could make. Hope he loves the car enough to make up for it. If I were him I would have purchased a 20k Jetta that I could afford and wait until I could afford what I want, but that is just me.

Hmmm - to clear though financial resources does not necessarily jive with credit score. So he/she may be able to afford it, but maybe in the past something affected his credit that still keeps him from being able to get the loan.

If Obama get elect again, I am going to open up a road paving business. There is this river road near my house that must have been repave over 4 times in the last 3 years under Obama's American jobs act. I think the four 6' x 6' American jobs act signs themself cost about $1000 a piece.
