iPhone 5 media dock - ETA

Any guesses when the iPhone 5 dock will be out?

Last time round, I think the iPhone 4 was released in July 2010, and the iPhone 4 dock came out in Feb 2011. That was a ridiculous wait.

I think it will be even longer, since it is a totally different connector. I would say at least a year. Whatever. I'm getting the iphone 5 ASAP.

The good news is that Apple will probably sell an adapter between the two - so there is hope.

It may take a year, but if there will be an adapter, re-wiring some pins shouldn't be that hard to retain similar functions. I'll hold off for the iPhone 5S or the following version when they work the bugs out.

Why be concerned about the dock? If you plug into the USB port you still have all of the functions that you would have with the dock. Right?

It is no longer a rumor. The pictures on Apple's website show a smaller connection.

Its pretty clear. You can buy the dock adapter cable to use the iPhone 5 with iPhone 4 dock in the BMW.

I believe they are talking about the snap in dock. if you use a cable, you wont need an adapter at all. just use the USB cable provided with the iphone 5 and connect it to the USB jack in the car.

Yeah I started the thread.

The point being made is that the snap in dock may not be available for 6-9 months.

In the meantime, those who want snap in functionality can use Apples new Dock Adapter cable to connect the old snap-in adapter to the new iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 won't sit in the cradle, but the cable will allow it to charge and have full snap-in like integration with the car.

You don't have to use the dock to have full integration. The USB port gives the full integration (this according to my BMW guy who has access to one of the software people that helped develop the interface). Why spend over $200 for the dock? The USB charges and integrates the phone just the same.....

The one extra thing that the cradle connector gives (over the standard USB connection) is an inductive antenna connection via the car's shark-fin antenna - hence a better signal.

Here is the Apple cable connector that will work with existing dock and give complete functionality (except however snapping in the cradle).

Exactly!

Yes you can get most/all of the functionality via a cable and MAYBE via an adapter (adapters do not always give you 100% of the functionality) but the loss of the gain antenna... that is huge.

I do love the statement from apple - "its been good to us" why change it? Their was no need whatsover except to be able to sell new cables and a slew of adapters.

Damn you apple... now when can i place my order... LOL

Anyone know the gain provided by the roof-mounted telephone antenna? I can't seem to find any specs.

New connector and yes a new adapter will be available for around $29 not including cord

Can you play video with the cable? What about the snap in, I thought that was the only way to play video, but Ive never actually tried.

I was at the keynote today up front. Had an opportunity to talk to a few folks. BMW is an active partner with Apple and they are already working on adapters. Hopefully the wait won't be as long.

In the interim, use USB to Lightning. Should work fine.

Video is not supported with the cable regardless. The snap-in adapter is needed for video.

I'm glad to hear this. BMW and Apple have been "active" partners for years now. Hopefully, they will bring this new dock out ASAP because nearly all iPhone owners will be getting the 5 next week
