I'm not sure how similar your experience will be to mine due to the 10 year gap in the production of our motors but I was amazed at how much the headers changed the characteristics of my motor. I have used an intake/exhaust/"stage 1" chip (which means a little more on OBD-I) and I had blown out VANOS seals. The car felt like it would give you pretty much 100% of its grunt from 2k rpms, with a reluctant VTEC-like tick over at 4k rpms where it would scream a little louder.

I rebuilt the VANOS and installed the headers in two weekends back to back, and now the only think the throttle pedal does in the low end of the RPM range is change how much noise it makes. It almost feels torqueless, it just starts moaning and slowly creeping towards 3k rpms, at 3k it wakes up a little, and at 4500 sh1t gets real and it throws everything it has to give at you. I scared myself a lil' bit the first week realizing just how much faster it gets to 100 in 4th.

Obviously a very healthy part of my power increase was due to fixing the VANOS and having the motor work as it was designed, but still, headers are a good mod.

I want to take the next step with mine and do the injector/3.5in MAF/custom tune thing, but you pretty much have to do all those things together, and I have no plans to spend that much money anytime soon.

Not sure how I missed this but. S54 Wagon you say?. Here's some pics of my friends S54 swapped wagon. It runs fine he literly just took EVERYTHING out of an M3 and put it into the wagon. The only things that don't work are the rear windows and traction control.
But who needs either becase race car.

In typical ffej fashion, this has been delayed by another month. Have to finish another car in my garage and get some work done on the race car before I dismantle the front of the wagon. I'm shooting for a late August/early September finish at this point...

I am > < this close to getting the motor swap done. Waiting on one small item to show up...a Diffsonline 3.64 LSD

Looks like Labor Day weekend will be the work weekend for the full swap:
Motor - with headers
Trans - including shifter and carrier
Driveshaft
Diff
Exhaust

I've found that I'm going to have to swap the valve covers, since the plug/pin setup for the ignition coils out of the DME is different between the two motors, so that will be yet another unexpected part of the job. I'm getting good at finding additional things that I'll have to do...

I will also shark the motor, just to get a more accurate tune going on. Going to be fun

I take it from your silence that you've been working on the car for the last 5 days straight? Is it done yet?

Bumper is long gone and the exhaust from the ZHP is going on the wagon when I get to it.

Thumbs up

That is very innovative! I bought a 328I in fl looking to transport it to NJ but would love to avoid all the calls and e-mails. I wonder if anyone has heard of a rate calculator?

The current going rate for closed-container transport is about a buck per mile....(blame it on high fuel costs )
