They are bi-xenon so the big 'O' serves as both high and low beams. The cornering lights, in the case of the X6, are the fog lights which shine in the prompt of a turned steering wheel. This way, you still have light in front of you as the big 'O' rotates to shine the corner you are turning into.

That was the exact same description from 2012.

I'm starting to agree with the poster who said the inner lights on the F10 are just dummies. But if so why would BMW go through the trouble of making them look different for 2013?

I just looked at the inner lights on my E70 and they're just dummies

The inner light on the F10 Xenon are definitely not dummies. Try putting the car in reverse and watch them both turn on. Or hit your turn signal and watch the one on that side turn on. Or turn the wheel all the way, same thing.

Agree, definitely not dummies. There's a bulb in there.

There are bulbs in the X6 as well, but they dont illuminate. I've tried everything to see what they do. Maybe it's time to RTFM... Just outta curiosity

On my e90 they turn on for maybe 15-20sec whenever I shift into reverse or turn on my turn signals.

Then perhaps this is the correct conclusion. Still a halogen bulb but new projector style? Looking at the F30 picture though, the cornering lights look very similar to the pair of main headlights. This was what led me to think they were xenon.

Could it be that the 2013 F10 is doing some cost savings and using the fog lights as cornering lights just like the F30? It sure seems like the inter light lens have change for the 2013 F10.

It does look better in terms of symmetry on the F30.

Yes, I definitely like the F30 symmetry more. Good luck to the '13 F10ers who might get it.

I think wildcardz has right: the inner pair of lamps may get illuminated by the Adaptive Headlight System in certain driving situations. In earlier models this lamp was driven by halogen bulbs, now BMW use a separate pair of xenon drive for the inner pair. No contradiction here.

My question (and concern) about the BMW bi-xenon technology, however, is the following: when the headlight is off (meaning that the xenon drive is inactive) and one activates the flash signalling light (by pulling up the left lever) the xenon high beam will be activated. This impulse lighting mode may degrade the life time of the xenon bulb, considerably. In other cars the flash light is driven by halogen bulbs even if combined with a bi-xenon. Anyone has an opinion?

So you know for sure the inner pair is Xenon? And not just projector style with old halogen?

This makes sense. I'm going to avoid flash signaling now.

I looked at every 2013 F10 on my dealers lot (535 and 550s) and visually they looked identical to 2012s. I didn't bother asking because that usually gets me no where.
Only the F30 and X5 had matching inner to outer lights/lenses.

No. Unlike LukeS, I saw F30s as well as F10s with the new inner light appearance. Photos for 2013 F10s on bmwusa.com also reflect this. The speculation is with respect to what this new appearance means.
