Alternate 17" wheels for snow

My plan is to buy another set of rims for the X1 xdrive28i Sport I've ordered; I believe the Sport comes with 18" wheels?

I had thought to swap to 17" wheels during the winter, as I understand that a higher profile tire tends to be better for snow handling. Can anyone advise what 17" wheel size/bolt profile are used with the X1? Does the wheel specifically need to be a BMW wheel, or will a decent set of aftermarkets, say, found on craigstlist, work without issue/damage?

Too, any suggestions for (unstudded) snow tires? A friend has blizzaks on his Audi S4 and he's quite happy with them, but would appreciate what other folks are using.

You'll want 225/50/17 tires, which is the size of the standard tires on the base model. The base model has 7.5" wide wheels, but 8" would work fine. I believe the center bore is 72.56 (most round up to 72.6) on a 5x120 bolt pattern.

Tires: Plenty of options to fit 17" wheels. There are speed rated tires that enhance traction without compromising handling too much. Or you can get tires that sacrifice handling in the interest of max snow and ice traction. You also need to decide if you want to stay with runflats or switch to conventional tires. Runflats are more expensive, heavier, and your choices will be much more limited.

Wheels: lots of choices. Simple spoke patterns are an advantage for cleaning. Black wheels look cool when clean, but will show road salt. The clearcoat on diamond cut or machined wheels tends to pit easily, so I try to avoid them for winter. Lots of Chinese made wheels look fine, but I wouldn't trust them based on looks alone. The casting method can tell a lot about the quality of a wheel. If the price seems to good to be true, trust your judgement. I'm not condemning all wheels from China, as several very good brands have moved manufacturing there and still make a decent product.

If in doubt, consult an expert. You can't go wrong with the Tire Rack. Discount Tire is decent too, and you probably have lots of local tire dealers that can help. And yes - you can find some bargains on CraigsList, ebay, etc, but proceed with caution.

Thanks, very useful information - so I should be looking for 17" wheel with 5x120 bolt pattern and 72.6 centerbore? What offset does the stock X1 wheel(s) have?

I think the stock 7.5" wide wheels have an offset of 34. If you go with 8" wide wheels, you'll want a little less offset, maybe 30. You have a little flexibility with offset, but you have to make sure you clear the suspension. Aside from potential clearance issues, too high an offset tucks the wheels too much and the car looks like something built by GM in the 80's.

Would a 2010 5 series x-drive wheel fit on 2012 X1 28i? The size looks the same just not sure about the clearance for the brake. It is a 5 star spoke style 138. I am thinking of buying a used set of these to put on the X1 for winter. Any advice is much appreciated.

Interesting how you only need to type one word to get all the answers you need.

Tires.

I wonder how much they pay the fest for that!

I put snow tires and wheels on my 328i and Tire Rack recommended using 16" wheels to better navigate in Winter.
By the way, I just turned the 328i back and picked up a new X1 so the wheels(Black) and snow tires are for sale.
