Mein Auto: 2013 BMW X1 xDrive28i
2013 X1 size comparison

I just picked up my Mineral White 2013 X1 xDrive28i. It will replace my X3 xDrive 3.0, which will most likely go to a family member. The inside does not really feel any smaller than the X3, except I can now reach the back seat. The cargo bay is a lot smaller.

I went from an X5 to an X3, and felt the quality of the X3 to be less. I sort of feel like that about the X1 in comparison to the X3: some of the parts seem "chintzier", but that's ok: they will make for a lighter car, right? I didn't really buy this for the luxury factor though. I'm relocating to Hawaii (the BI) and I need a decent low-key car that can take me back and forth to the beach and an occasional trip to Costco.

Anyway, attached is a shot of the new X1 along side my old 2005 X3 for a comparison. The X1 is actually quite beefy.

Mein Auto: 2013 X1, 2012 Q5
vs Q5

Compared to our Q5, the front seat is only marginally smaller, but the back seat and cargo areas are substantially smaller. My Forester has quite a bit more cargo capacity than the Q5, and more than twice that of the X1.

You're not imagining the drop in interior quality. I also recently sold my X3 3.0si and its interior was the same material as the E90 3 series. The X1 interior materials have high hard plastic content, really to the point that it feels in many ways like a Japanese vehicle of substantially less $$. Another observation is that the cargo cover is not even close to the high quality of the E83's retracting blind. The X1's cargo cover reminds me of my '75 Scirocco's. Chintzy plastic and I reckon pretty easy to break if mistakenly stepped on while off the vehicle.

BTW, I sat in a new F30 328i, and while more stylish than an E90, the material quality drop was similar. More hard plastic surfaces along all four doors.

Oh well, the focus is on the goodness - great motor selections, RWD or X-Drive. Decent dash arrangement. And drives well.
