About to ditch an iPhone - will Android Samsung Galaxy S 3 work with iDrive Office?

ie. will I get phonebook syncing, blutooth calling and on top of that emails, sms's etc with the Galaxy S III which I am about to buy?

As of the latest sw update of my F11 with combox, my S2 will only sync media.
Before the sw update I had phone and music and contacts.
Sms , email and internet functionality never worked.

Man... I wish I could get at least phone and contacts. I'd be shocked if Android was behind the silly iOS in anything. That is the primary reason I am done with iPhone - controlled and skimpy functions in iOS compared to Android (and small screen size of i5).

Yep, it works. My old Evo3D worked as well.

Emails too?

On my HTC inspire, phonebook syncing and BT calling, BT music all work.

I checked with BMWNL today.
The galaxy s2 with the 4.03 and my F11 combox and latest phone software 4.0.3 should have phone and contacts.
For now I have got music playback (little functionallity) and phone, no contacts.
Before the latest update I had contacts as well.
Actually I got a dedicated 6230i in the cradle of the car and use that as carphone, works nice, no hassle.
But well these systems still suck for not delivering what you might expect.
Tethering does not work either and the onboard internet facilities of the car itself are completely redundant compared to my galaxy.

Hmm, I like the car though, all these gimmicks are still only that.

I just paired my Galaxy S3 and got phone, contacts and SMS messages (whoa, that's new for me and it reads them out loud too, the problem is... SMS is a BS technology of the XX-century which I do not use)....

Unfortunately no email. Maybe it's just a setting? Anyone?

Are you using Gmail app? Gmail app won't work with the car. You need to use the separate e-mail application.

I am able to sync my email if I use the native email app. It doesn't work for the gmail app.

I am actually using both, Gmail and the native app (each has benefits, I find the native app does not sync as quickly...). Should I enable something else in the native app or just ditch the gmail app to get it to work?

That is instant messaging, not SMS. Completely different.

So we're you able to get the S3 to work completely?

No, still no email... HELP!!

Relax, I had the in car connetivity for a while.
Got all my emails in by BMW, in first in frst showed order.
What a laugh, no use at all, as is having e mail on your screen in the right order.
You will not use it quite a lot, while there is no interaction.
So stop the car and stick to the usability of you Galaxy.
Calm down, I hope this helps....

+1 Folks are wrapped so tight over the connected office. Even it worked, the execution of the system is quite poor.

If it did work, and worked quite qell, BMW would be advertising it.

For the record, BMW does not advertise iDrive, Nav, Bluetooth, BMW Connected app, etc.

Why? because on a good day a very small part of the tech works right.

I am not sure how the automobile industry consistently gets away selling defective crap.

p.s. I would think twice before swapping an iPhone fo a Droid. The grass always seems greener on the other side.

I am sorry - I don't agree with you on the advertising - its all over their website, and they made specific marketing videos about iDrive, Nav, etc.

PS - I went from a Droid Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean to an iPhone 5 and you are right - I should have stayed with the android. How come Siri can give me directions and call me by my name but I can not ask her to turn bluetooth on/of?

Web site marketing videos are crap and mean nothing. Lexus, Ford, and Cadillac are actually running prime time commercials. Not BMW.

Funny, Sophisto... on my way home today I actually thought the very same... Unless iDrive was able to receive new emails by push and read them out loud instantenously - I concur, what is the point of having silly emails on the iDrive screen... I was dying to see it work but now I wonder myself: why? I got no clue...

I did not do anything... upon pairing, the GS3 asked me three questions and I clicked OK to all:
- bmw is requesting access to contacts
- bmw is requesting accces to phone
- bmw is requesting access to messages

MORE NEWS though! this morning all of the sudden it has requested access to music (a new option appeared in the bluetooth settings menu on the iDrive)!!! Yeah! Maybe it had something to do with me discovering that grooveshark now works using HTML5 in a browser so I got free music + streamed with bluetooth to my car's speakers! AMAZING and SOOOO COOL! (my grooveshark playlists work too, plain miracle...)

Nope, it's my third day and iphone 4 and 5 seem like complete jokes now (mind you I've had the iPhone since ver 1 and loved it to death). iPhone 5 announcement was a complete shock and disappointment so I said screw it. The GS3 has a perfect size screen, super-responsive UI (they've all caught up with Apple I must say!) and the functionality of Android, albeit more complex as expected and not a surprise to me (I work in IT so what's the big deal), is exactly what I needed. Also, finally free from BS iTunes and App store with gestappo app approval style and complete lack of customization of the iOS (dumbed down operating system to cater to 3 year olds as well as old folks.)

In fact, all of my friends are now equally stunned and looking to swap to GS3 as well, they were quite impressed when I showed it to them. iPhone era is over if you ask me. I simply wonder if it has anything to do with Job's death or the competition simply did their homework at last (read: copied the best from Apple and then improved it and set it all free).

I think you are confusing me with another poster. I do not remember making any negative comments about the iDrive in this thread. But yes, its functionality leaves a lot to be desired. My dream - let Google take over and write Automobile Operating System (AOS).

Speaking of the commercial, it kinda sucks but Send to Car is a really cool option - one I love the most about the iDrive. I use it a lot to get to many unknown destinations around my large metropolis on a frequent basis.

One correction here... Apple did not invent many things in the iOS contrary to the popular belief. App store, multi-screens, app repositioning and many more features were invented by the jailbreak community... all present and available to advanced users long before Apple folks even conceived them in their brains. The community turned the iPhone into what it is today and Apple cashed in in the process. No problem with that, by the way, just glad the competition has finally caught up and made it all even better.
