Brake Job FYI

Just did a complete brake job on my baby.
Front and back drilled rotors and pads of course. They add to the cars look for sure.
I followed Yorgi's brake job DIY and it was spot on.
At first a little intimidating but actually very easy if you have the required tools.
It took me several hours to do mine but if I had to do it again I could do it in about 1.5 hours after taking the tires off. I did mine at the coast guard hobby shop where they have a lift for your car and all the tools you would need for any job. I'm retired Air Force Reserves so I have access to military MWR facilities.

Word of note... The rear rotors where a bitch to get off. The set screws had to be drilled out because of rust (very common ) and had to use a puller, banger (dent puller kind of thing but with a hook for rotors) with lots of banging with a hammer to get the rotors off. So if you don't have the required tools ie puller, drills , easy outs, banger ect it could be a nightmare.
In any case all turned out great. I don't know how much money I saved but I'm sure it was a few bucks at least

Hi! I did a complete front and rear replace twice as I had issues with brake squeal, A very satisfying job to do with a result you can feel the benefit of both in driving the car and the cost saving.....

What did you do to remedy the brake squeal? I did my rears 3 weeks ago and they only squeal when you first apply the brake and when the car is almost stopped. Before the car comes to a slow stop though it is smooth. I have power washed and performed 3 or 4 hard stops. It is less squeaky but it still squeaks!!

Any suggestions?

Hi ! I have done a couple of threads about brake squeal! For a period of time it was an absolute pain and undermined such an expensive car. I had replaced all discs and pads on all four wheels, the fluid complete brake bleeds, and still had the squeal ( I did this twice with about 10k between the first and second set, with that stupid squeal never going away), I took them off again and used lots of brake pad paste, even changed one calliper completely and still had brake squeal, replaced all of the guides and the anti squeal springs, all with BMW genuine parts and still brake squeal..... was at a total loss,, I then for no solid reason increased the tension on all of the anti squeal springs, even though they were brand new and set to whatever BMW tension spec was, they were a bit of a pig to get on, but it cured the problem never had brake squeal again, Can I say this was the problem ? no but having done all that work and the cost it was only after this that it actually stopped, that is all that mattered to me!!!!

Same here jus got new brakes and the brake squeal just doest stop. I was told that they will stop ????? but when they must be something we can do??

Nice job coug60! Now you have more money to spend on that bar tab . Nothing beats being able to do things yourself. I've always said that if I ever had the money do custom build my own house, one of the garage bay will have a lift in it for sure.

Try bedding in the pads for starters. Zeckhausen instructions for bedding brakes.

I just followed Yorgi,s DIY and have no problems. Ive always have done a through cleaning of parts before reinstalling on a vehicle. For any job I think that is one of the biggest things you can do....

I have always liked working on my own cars but this is the first foreign car I've ever worked on. Its a good feeling to work on cars and do a good job. Having access to a lift and all the tools I need for any job makes a big difference though.....

Next job I think is some body styling.... And some seat work. I've worn a spont on my drivers seat from getting in and out of the car.....
